I snorted laughter into my drink and than immediately felt bad for you. People underestimate how long those sucker's teeth really are. Are you and the bunny okay and healing?

It bit me on the knuckle so while it has healed it does hurt like a bitch from time to time.

The bunny and I have made peace, his name is Peanut and we're trying to find him a girlfriend. He's a bit shy and skittish and the last fee match ups went a bit sour because he can't talk to girls. Pro-tip, do not try to seperate bunnies with your hands if they're attacking each other.

ugh. Knuckle is a devil. Sorry to hear it but really happy to hear you healed up well and that you're working on healing up Peanut's little heart too. I was a hamster rescue for a while and you could always tell who came in that had been owned by people that had no idea what to do with them and often just ignored or mishandled them. Weirdly, my hamster time really helped when I got bunnies of my own. You're really doing a good thing taking care of those buns. I imagine it breaks your heart sometimes but I know you make a world of difference to theirs. Also - oven mitts. Save your fingers.

Thank you! I kind of feel that it's a badge of pride now. It's very sad because Peanut is so wonderful with humans but he has a hard time making friends. I'm really invested in seeing a nice end for him.

I feel you on that so much, we don't have hamsters in Australia but I'm starting to research local rat and mouse rescues to help out at. We've had a LOT of sad bunny cases because people buy them for kids and don't want to invest the time.

Thank you so much for the support, it actually means the world to me. I honestly wasn't super interested in rabbits until I started volunteering for my course and realised what kind of shit they go through. The people I've met through it are incredible as well and that makes all the difference. I'm also investing in some sturdy gardening gloves.

Do bunnies become calm around you once they get to know you, or are they skittish no matter how long you hang out with them? And how do bunnies show affection if they like you?

Bunnies are the preyiest of prey animals so I think there's always a bit of skittishness in them. Then again, rabbits vary a lot in personality so maybe I've just never met a super confident one that never flinches.

They definitely become more calm ans affectionate with a lot of socialising. A lot of the time I'm at the Rescue just to hold bunnies and play with them. I've also started trying to convince my roomie's bunnies to like me by giving them a treat every time I walk into their space.

Bunnies are social groomers and it's how they establish dominance. You're whipped if they stick their heads out and downward for pats (they also bonk you), but it means they trust you. They'll also lie or flop down around you with their legs stuck out and a slow twitching nose which means they feel safe and don't want to run. They love cuddles and a lot of the ones I deal with will hop into laps, sometimes you get a lick or some content teeth grinding.

what kind of advice would you give someone that was thinking of getting a bunny for the first time?

Re: Bunny Rescue Volunteer/Animal Services Student

Please keep your bunny indoors, outdoor bunnies are exposed to predators, disease and stress. Get your bunny used to being picked up, always support their legs when you do.

Cuddle them lots and spend time with them, but buy them in a pair or they'll be sad. Avoid pet shops if you can because they don't know shit and breeders are more ethical with socialised bunnies (generally). Hutches are crap but give them a cardboard box or somewhere to hide as well as toys for their forever growing teeth.

They're a long term commitment, they live to be about 8 or more. Watch closely for signs of illness because they won't show them readily. You really get out what you put in with bunnies, the more time you spend with them the more they start to get playful and give affection.

Netherland dwarfs are tiny devils who hate indiscriminately. Lops are good starter bunnies.

bunnies are social?

Bunnies live in dens with other bunnies, so yee. They like to have someone they can cuddle and depend on, bonded pairs groom one another and lie together. We also have a bunny at home that hops on the couch and plays with us.

huh. i actually did not know this. i thought they were pretty solitary aside from when they had babies around

Surprisingly rabbits are shitty mothers who leave their babies and feed them once a day, giving no fucks if some die or don't feed.

to be fair the mortality rate amoung young bunnies in the wild (and their mothers) is crazy high. Not to mention the longer a mother is around, the easier it is for predators to find the den. But yeah, still no mother of the year awards going out to most mama bunnies (except the one that killed a chicken when it tried to eat her babies). Unrelated to chickens, I found this on youtube the other day. If anyone was curious about how a mother feeds her babies. It's crazy.

Yeah there's definitely an instinctive reason for it but I guess a lot of people are used to social animals like dogs and cats being super dedicated mothers.

I've actually never seen that before so I'm gonna have a look at it. Tbh bunnies are so misunderstood I just love creating any discourse about them.

Bunnies can be such amazing pets but they really do take a lot more time and effort than a lot of people are aware. People like you, not only helping them find forever homes and loving them in the meantime, but also talking to other people about them and helping educate are exactly what bunnies need most. It makes me so happy hearing about it and I hope you get back in spades all the good you're passing out. In bunny AND in people karma.

Oh my gosh anon, you made me tear up a little.

I had no idea what I was going to do with my degree when I started but working at the shelter has made me so rambling and passionate about rabbits it's embarrassing. I honestly don't feel like I'm doing all that much but I could talk about small animal welfare for daaaayyyyssss. Shelter work is super enriching and I highly recommend it for everyone.
