When the cat masturbates its chin

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I feel like there's the potential for a lot of negative Cr that gets initiated and then immediately abandoned or glossed over for some reason? It's pretty frustrating for me, personally, and it makes me wonder if I should even keep playing here when nobody is interested in my characters for anything but generic to positive cr.

Problem is that I like the game, and the setting, and most of the writers, I just have no clue where this trend of 'instant forgiveness' comes from. I mean, I can understand not wanting to play out serious interpersonal conflict or prejudices in your pretendy online fun time, and that's fine if it's a player's preference to gloss some cr over to allow for that. I'd be cool letting negative cr slip by now and again, if it helped someone enjoy rp more, but it seems like this is everyone and always here.

If there's no conflict to address, none of the characters can grow and I was really looking forward to seeing how that would work out for mine.

i can't really comment on this thread as a whole, it's not something i've noticed one way or the other. but i am a passerby in this game and i live for negative cr.

hit me up on sockblocker if you're interested/comfortable, and i'd love to see if it's something where our characters could work out some long term negativity.

I am seriously tempted, anon. I'm super thirsty for sustained negative cr, so I may hit you up later tonight.

Instant forgiveness where? I can assure you that I've seen the opposite of that.

Really? Congratulations, anon, and I mean that sincerely. I haven't had this experience at all.

Calling it instant forgiveness was probably not the best way to refer to it, but all the conflict my characters have gets resolved so fast it barely has any time to register.

I wish we could trade experiences. You would love how many folks hate my character.

ime the best way to get sustained negative CR is to give it. Find characters yours would dislike and figure out how to make it mutual.

I'm trying to do that now but it's hard. When I try to set it up OOCly I get a lot of pushback.

I too live for negative cr and I want more of it. I think sometimes the instant forgiveness happens because people don't want their character to be seen as a bigot or an asshole? Which is understandable, but at the same time it's no fun if you're playing the asshole all the time and no one else will rise to it. Just fight me man come on

(Anonymous) 2016-02-09 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who has played many bigots and assholes I get that playing that guy can be pretty limiting. I can also see why people would be reluctant to have their character point at another and say "THAT GUY'S A DICK, I DON'T LIKE HIM", especially in a game with so many characters who are ICly very vocal about getting along, etc, etc.

I feel like anything short of shivving a guy in the courtyard isn't going to garner a reaction.

I wish the in-universe prejudices were more up front and obvious.

Then again since they're, you know, racism, jingoism, religious zealotry, genocide, and slavery, I can't really blame any one player for not wanting to have their character be really devoted to any part of the status quo. My characters can't throw in hard with any of that, not without some development, and I can't seem to get the development to do it.

TL;DR I would totally be that asshole character who picks fights and polarizes people but I can't get there unless I app someone different into the game.

There have definitely been efforts made to bring more attention to in-universe prejudices, but I've found that a lot of attempts will result in players OOCly reacting negatively to what the character is saying. They'll get tetchy about it on plurk or in their narration, but their characters won't act on it at all. And as has been mentioned, it's a play-style thing if somebody just doesn't want negative CR and that's worth respecting, but it's such a bummer when you're trying to create it in a friendly OOC atmosphere but no one will react to it ICly.

This isn't an enormous widespread problem that I've noticed, but it is a thing with a few people that play characters whose hands I wish would get a little dirtier. I don't think less of them as players, I just love when the gloves come off in RP and wish people felt more secure doing that.

Also it definitely doesn't help that there are communities like this devoted to backhandedly tearing people down for making certain character decisions, but I'm really happy we're using it to discuss a thing like adults instead and I hope any lurkers as well as anons would find that reassuring.

Oh totally.

I noticed as soon as my character ICly made a decision about dating another character, someone got angry about it OOCly because it offended their sensibilities. This is exactly why I'm hesitant to do anything that would really stick my character out there like that since players get OOCly mad about in game decisions.

It's frustrating!
