When the cat masturbates its chin

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

there's a difference between getting negative cr, and getting absolutely no positive cr.

that sounds horrible, but at least there are a fair amount of players (I want to say most) who either would or already do have positive CR with said canonically feared character types. I'm sorry that hasn't been your experience though, and I hope it gets better.

all of the characters i play would be down for positive interactions with templars.

i've played characters like that before and found that having them speak freely basically results in this. i'm 100% down for negative cr and letting my character be wrong and awful but it makes for an isolating game experience when that's all you get and no one is willing to at least try reaching out to your character.

THIS.

I feel so utterly isolated from the rest of this game because of who I apped. Like I told someone before, my first app should've just been some Ritter instead. I need to get a better feel of the game playing someone not of that heated Mage v.s Templar business.

I feel like I can't enjoy Faderift as I am with the character I have. I've been avoiding doing any kind of tagging in there because of this feeling of total isolation.

Are you on plurk? Assuming you haven't done this already, if you bring this up and ask other players to help you address the problem I think you'll find they're more than willing. The object here is to have fun as a group, after all.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-09 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
How true. We'll see.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-08 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
is this actually what's happening though? like for all the people screeching about mage rights on plurk the few templars we have in game seem to be doing all right cr-wise, from what i can tell. i know there are a lot of mages but we've also got a few templars now, as well as people who don't give a fuck either way.

it does seem like more than a few people are super allergic to any negative cr at all though, or take things way too personally and can't deal with anyone disliking their characters even if it's justified and clearly ic. in which case...op's right, why would you play someone like a templar in a mage-heavy da game.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-09 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is happening and to be frank I'm sick of it. I'm sure the OP is tired of it along with others.

No one is allergic to negative cr, it's just that it seems like there's nothing half these Templars can do to swing all that negativity around for something positive. It's like the option itself doesn't exist because everyone in game is obsessed with pushing negative cr over anything remotely positive.

It's like a one trick pony at this game. For me, it feels utterly repetitive.

One more thing...

I'm not advocating that players can't play their characters as they desire BUT (hear me out here), if a pivotal CANON mage character can see past his hatred towards Templars to befriend one or two, then what does that say about the dozens of mage OCs who follow in this character's footsteps/archetype?

I'm just thinking out loud here, I realize but I think this is an interesting counter argument.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-09 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm confused about your line of thinking-- what does it say about other mage OCs? I assume you're talking about Anders, but I'm not sure why other mage OCs would be expected to follow his example, because they're not ...him, and it strikes me as a little disrespectful to assume that they're all closely modeled after him because I don't think any of them actually are.

if I've completely misinterpreted what you've said then I apologize.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-09 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Disrespectful? Non, non! Not my intentions at all really.

Merely pointing out some facts here since most of these OC mages have a traumatic past likened to Anders. It's completely fine if the OCs mimic a canon muse here and there. In the end they do hold their own individuality to make themselves unique enough to be characters and not a carbon copy of a particular premise.

However, I find it interesting that a main character who introduced this premise can overcome a key aspect of their hatred like that. We all know that wouldn't be possible if the Templars current are the absolute monsters everyone icly claims them to be. Now whether this is because other characters haven't been privy to meet these Templars or not is a question, or perhaps no one icly and oocly wants to acknowledge this drastic change among the Templar just yet.

Whichever the case, I'm curious to know.

I think it's a variety of factors, including the other characters having their own sets of biases unrelated to Anders' backstory, and probably that they haven't met all the templars at skyhold, etc.

I think any lack of wanting to acknowledge it OOCly might just be that our sampling of templars is really small and not super reflective of what canon templars have gotten up to. The more peaceful templars are seen as exceptions to the rule, which to be fair I think they basically are. They're dealing with a really violent and corrupt history, and most characters are going to respond to that first and get to know them after.

I don't think you should give up hope though, since honestly some of the most satisfying CR can come from characters who used to mistrust or dislike each other. If you're uncomfortable with how something is going, I bet you could bring it up to the other player OOCly and try to figure something out that won't ruin your day.

I'm taking your advice here, anon.

Instead of fretting over all of the negative cr brought to my muse, I'll just embrace it and see what how it progresses. Maybe I'll actually get the character relations I want by trudging through the expected debauchery. If not, at least I'll have something interesting to put on their character relation chart I so quickly neglected.

This is a far better idea than just merely giving up. Maybe having a few adversaries ICly will be good for his character growth. Not everyone in the Hold will agree with the Inquisition's march thus far. I know my muse certainly doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-09 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me? That's exactly what's happening on my end. Blessedly there's a handful of characters icly who support my muse's efforts but I'm oocly burnt out of FadeRift on my end.

welcome to a game populated by anders stans.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-09 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's really not though. Talk to Cass about Anders for five seconds and you'll see she hates him.
