Firefly/GOTG bounty hunter vs criminal thing

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus, this got tl;dr, sorry about that.

I have no idea if this premise has been done yet (which will be pretty embarrassing if it has and I'm really late to the party,) but I'm going to put it out there because I really want to play this. I'm open for feedback on pretty much everything and willing to shuffle things around if people feel strongly about certain elements.

Basically a panfandom AU that is a space bounty-hunter vs criminal type thing that's Guardians of the Galaxy and Firefly-esque. Although, I'm flexible on the AU, if people want it so their characters have been suddenly abducted to this life like Peter Quill was, that'd be cool.

Space travel is the biggest industry in this galaxy, so it's quite easy for characters from different planets to show up at various space stations/planets ready to hunt down the latest criminals or commit their biggest heist yet. Your character will choose a life of bounty hunting or criminal activity which will hopefully create some interesting cr and plotlines.

• If we're going with an AU, characters wouldn't need to have their canon powers nerfed or be humanized because 'from a different planet than you and it's normal where I come from'. It could be explained away.
• Player plots would be highly encouraged as there's a lot of reason for there to be natural conflict.
• There would be a few planets/space stations established. I don't know if I should set up bounty hunter collectives and criminal gangs, or let the player base form their own.
• If people wanted some npc time there could be an introduction of a police force or mafia gangs that could stir the pot.
• There would be an extra AC reward system that is a team effort. Every month/2 months a "market place" post would go up, offering new unlockable weapons and item. Players would be encouraged to pool their AC points together to buy stuff together for their "teams/collective/gangs".
• And finally, the thing I'm struggling with the most is how to come up with a rewarding system for bounty hunters to turn criminals in, but also make it so criminals don't spend eternity locked away. I figure escapes, jail breaks, and bribing your way out of a capture would work for the criminals. I dunno if bounty hunters would care IC because they got paid so who cares what happens to their targets after that. I'm just worried that OOC it would be super annoying to see these people you just captured already out again in a flash. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

That's basically all I've dreamt of this far before I get feedback on things. Thoughts?

(Also, if there is interest in this, I'd definitely need help modding. Let me know if you're interested!)

Oh god yes yes yes yesssssss. Especially if it's AU or mixed AU/OU. I've been wanting something Firefly/Cowboy Bebop-esque for ages. I don't know if I can commit to modding, but I'll think about it.

As for giving bounty hunters an incentive, maybe law enforcement is extremely patchy between planets and there's little or no unified Space Police? So bounty hunters are just taking jobs from local governments or the mafia or companies or whatever, and those organizations have very limited power outside their own jurisdiction if the criminals escape. I'd think that most bounty hunters would have a "doesn't matter, got paid" attitude. And depending on how flexible you are with backdating/forwarddating, criminals could be in jail for a decent amount of time without it affecting gameplay too much.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wanted this, hahah. It'd be awesome if you do decide to jump on board!

I really like this concept, btw. It fleshes out the world more, which is awesome. And yeah, I think backdating and forwarddating will be pretty pivotal to the game running smoothly.

this sounds really cool, actually. just a few notes:

-i think NPCs are unnecessary. use them for flavor/background noise and nothing more. the PvP has all the drama you need.
-i love that AC reward system, holy shit
-personally, i don't think it's too big of a deal for criminals to be breaking out immediately. i wouldn't find it annoying OOC if i knew that was what was going to happen. like, if i believed they'd be out of play for a month and then they were back the next day, that would bug me, but if i knew they get out immediately and my only goal was to get them in, that would be fine. the only way it might get annoying is if there was an excessive number of criminals who went around taunting the bounty hunters who captured them two days ago about already being out. that would be dickish and annoying.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

- That makes sense about the npc, so I wont both going to in depth with them.
- I'm glad! I'm really excited to think of stuff that could go up for "sale"
- Hmmm, I see what you mean. Anon above suggested forwarddating as a way to work around a potential prison time, so maybe I'll encourage that.

Give criminals an incentive to want to keep their characters in jail longer? It doesn't necessarily have to be IC rewards, but I'd be more likely to not care about leaving my character in jail for a month if there's things for me to do during that time.

Like maybe in jail logs or video chats out of jail or something along those lines?

Or flesh out the jail setting more so it's a setting and not just a blank box.

Here's the problem I'm having, I think.

I've got a good feel for how you'd run the bounty hunter side of things. The game's new so I'm not penalizing a lack of tl;dr, but I have a few ideas on how to float a bounty hunter, what incentives I'd have to capture criminals, what would cause my character to work together with other characters, and so on.

But by comparison I'm struggling a little, I think, to figure out how I'd integrate a criminal based upon the very limited information here. Unless you do have a crime syndicate (which might expedite the swift release of certain criminals and make it make sense - something to consider) I'm not exactly sure how my criminal would run into other criminals criminalizing and make it make sense and be IC. Plus, if there's unlimited planets, there's still the entire factor of if there's a bounty out on my character why don't they run the fuck off to Jupiter to lay low for a couple of months until the bounty dies down. And criminals need to actually pull heists and the like to get a bounty on their heads, right? Or piss off the right people.

Plus, I guess, it's like this. For your game to run, you need criminals to get caught, right? When criminals get caught, the bounty hunters have incentives. They get money and whatever. The criminal can't tag for X days and has to put any plots they had in mind on hold until they escape.

Basically, as of right now with what limited information I have, if I was a criminal I feel like I'd be more like a monster of the week NPC than anything else. Definitely can be fixed, but you just need to flesh out that side a little now and balance things out, or maybe reconsider it being a straight bounty hunter/criminal deal and consider the fact bounty hunters can have bounties on their heads as well and make it more muddled in general. Plenty of ways you can take it.

Hmmm, yeah, I see exactly what you're saying. I'm glad to hear that there's potential to work around this, though. I'm going to give it some thought to see if I can come up with something decent and post it again in the new post.

(Also, when you mentioned unlimited planets to hide in, I started thinking maybe I should narrow the space travel down to a single solar system? Maybe less cool, but better parameters.)

Thanks so much for giving me feedback!

Well, IRL prisons are often centers of gang activity and organization... so if players plan ahead a little so a couple of characters are arrested at about the same time (either by PC or NPC bounty hunters), there could be major plot going on in the prison. And in IRL jails it's possible to smuggle in cell phones, so prisoners can still participate in network stuff.

I don't know if you're planning to keep this game sandboxy or if you're planning to run modplots, but you could even have a plot where characters *have* to go to prison in order to get some critical piece of information. Flesh out some prison settings so they're part of the game, not a punishment that takes characters away from the game.

That's a smart idea. I like it a lot. tbh I wasn't thinking about running modplots, but this gives me a better idea of maybe how to introduce one. Thanks!
