When the cat masturbates its chin

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Question. Should I switch to calling him Muhammad Avdol, or should I stick with Abdul? I've used the latter since before translated materials were as reliable as they are now and it's kind of a habit now, but I don't want to make things awkward for other players.

I've used "Abdul" forever since that's obviously what it's meant to be, tbh, and I don't plan on changing any time soon.

Awesome. I'll stick with it too, then! Thank you!

as a sdc player i just go with whatever the mun is using. i like avdol better personally but it's such a small difference that it really doesn't bother me either way. you do you, i don't think anyone's gonna give you flak for it. :|b

Thank you for the response! My main concern was, yeah, stepping on other players' toes/ doing something objectively wrong in fandom. Everyone playing from Jojo in dwrp seems really cool, though.

all the jojo players i've met so far have been super nice, it's really encouraging. ;A;

and if you do actually run into someone who's giving you grief over names instead of being pumped that SOMEONE'S PLAYING AVDOL they're not worth threading with anyway, let's be real.

canon-blind anon here, but if he's meant to be from an Arabic-speaking country or named in Arabic tradition, more correct would be Abdul! Arabic language generally doesn't have a "v" letter/sound unless it's being borrowed from another language anyway, so it'd probably get pronounced as a B anyway. (Even the letter for the V-sound isn't a natural inclusion in the modern Arabic alphabet; it gets borrowed from Farsi/Persian).

Even when translators are good for general story, or straight japanese to english, sometimes the people on staff get stumped by words that are phonic representations of foreign words, or fail to realize it is a foreign word, and just make a best-guess effort.

If it's not supposed to be an Arabic name though (like, it's supposed to be made up, the character's an alien, etc), you should probably go with Avdol.

Yeah, that's part of the problem! He's Egyptian, so it's always felt more right for me to use Abdul, but the romanisation ("abuduru") gets rendered as "Avdol" in pretty much all of the official translations/ merch. Thank you for the reassurance! Also the interesting language stuff, I didn't know about any of that.

No problem! I'll admit I'm only a student of Arabic, not a native speaker, so there may be some historical connotations I'm not yet familiar with, but the stuff with V is accurate as best I know. Anon below me appears to have the explanation for why he got this rename, though, which is a way funnier story than what I expected.

hey canon blind anon, just wanted to add that while you're on the ball of it being abdul in terms of the character himself, the confusion stems from araki's penchant of naming characters in jojo's bizarre adventure after music artists. abdul/avdol was named after paula abdul (yeah i know...) so there have been cases where names have been changed to side step copyright/libel laws in official translations, like Jean Pierre Polnareff (named after Michel Polnareff) being changed to Jean Pierre Eiffel or my favourite, ACDC, Cars and Wham (named after the bands/song of the same name) into Esidisi, Kars and Wammu.

it's weird and a cause of slight headache to the fandom

I thought Kars, Esidisi, and Wamuu were all used in the official artbook though.

da, +1

those weren't changes, that's how their names are meant to be written according to the kana.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-07 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
esidisi and kars would be written the same way but wamuu is definitely written as wa-mu-u rather than wa-mu so it makes sense that the other spellings are the correct ones!

more to the point, he didn't use the names used for the actual bands in Japanese. he was being "clever" and mystifying the existing names

op

(Anonymous) 2016-02-08 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
i don't know much japanese so i actually didn't know this was the case :o well that's good to know that it was just araki being araki rather than... what i thought he was doing

........ oh my god i spat my fucking drink laughing REALLY? that's amazing. like i knew the named-after-musicians thing was a thing and it definitely makes sense to not name characters AC/DC in english
but real names.... my god, this is way more entertaining than inept translators, i feel so bad for them.

likewise, i am so sorry to your fandom
