When the cat masturbates its chin

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

It was about 5 years ago.

After taxes were taken out, I split it in half. One half went into retirement funds (low-risk, even though I'm young I don't want to play the stock market and lose everything), and the other half was spent getting my life in order. Paid off college debt and credit card debts, bought a nice house and car, set aside 25k each for my siblings for college, and took a vacation with the family. After all of that I still had about 150k left, which is currently split up between a couple savings accounts at different banks. I know investing that last bit would probably be the smartest thing, but having that kind of money within reach in case of an emergency is reassuring.

My lifestyle didn't really change much. 3 million (actually just under 2 million, after taxes and such) isn't really 'change your lifestyle FOREVER' kind of money, it's really easy to burn through it if you're not careful. I still have my old job and live in the city I grew up in, just in a slightly nicer part of town. I have a pretty common name, so most people don't even realize that I won the lottery. Which is nice, people don't come around asking for money anymore (the first six months were hell though, extended family came crawling out of the woodwork when they heard I suddenly had a new house and car).

Yep! Car was 16k, and the house was 95k plus fees.

I was about to say 'why would I lie about it' but then I remembered. It's the internet.

My house is pretty great! It's a small 2-bedroom house in a neighborhood near an elementary school. Second bedroom is being used for storage right now, and I imagine I'll have to sell it and move if I ever get married and have kids, but for now it's just the right size for me. The yard is fenced-in, and my dog loves going outside every morning and afternoon when the kids walk by on their way to and from school.

My taxes aren't too terrible. They're actually slightly less a year than what I was paying in rent, so it's manageable for me. It would probably be worse of a pain if I had a house payment too, but since I bought the house outright I only have the taxes and utilities to worry about.

I'm really glad you used the money to get your life in order. A lot of lotto winners go overboard and end up bankrupt, but you were really smart in those choices! :)
