When the cat masturbates its chin

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

on the one hand, I'm all for promoting Classic Who and introducing more people to it. but on the other hand, I can totally see why the New Who player might not want to watch Classic Who, if only for the radically different format change wrt episode length (and I don't blame them, some of those six parters are a fucking SLOG.) Different strokes, anon.

I'm always a little torn on this. On the one hand, I get why no one wants to watch thirty years of who. But on the other, I feel like playing the doctor does require at least a basic understanding of classic who. I mean, they're the same character.

In my mind it's like if you were playing Yuna from FFX-2 without ever playing FF. You could do it, but there's still a hole somewhere.

caveat that I'm totally canonblind with regards to Final Fantasy so can't talk about that example, but I'm willing to cut New Who Doctor players a bit of slack mostly /because/ of the whole thirty years of canon thing and even Classic players haven't seen everything (whereas FF is just one game, right?)

of course, Doctor Who does have great resources for people to just get a basic understanding (TARDIS wikia, the Doctor Who youtube page has a smattering of Classic Who clips, all the specials that BBC America made around the 50th anniversary), so while I'd still love it if New Who Doctor players just like, sat down and watched 'Genesis of the Daleks' or one of the greatest hits serials, at least there are resources if they don't have the time/dailymotion links/whatever to at least dip into Classic Who.

did you mean ffx, or just ff?

because expecting someone to play earlier ff games to rp a character from a recent one is kind of ridiculous. none of them are connected or set on the same world, except when they're direct sequels, and the components that do recur between them are really minor. playing the very first final fantasy isn't going to add anything to someone playing from ffx-2.

don't be pedantic you know they fucking meant ffx

The analogy was drawn in reference to watching 30+ years of canon, though, which scope-wise is a hell of a lot closer to saying "you should play all of ff".

Yeah, I'm well aware of that and I'm sitting on my hands because I know New and Old are really different shows. But I want someone to squeal with about Benton/The Deadly Assassin/Guy Crayford feels/etc.

Sergeant Benton? I'll squeal with you, nonny. I adored the UNIT eps in the Third and Fourth Doctors' era.

personally i hated them. i didn't watch doctor who for the doctor sitting around earth pretending to be james bond. making him stuck on earth might have been a good financial idea, but it wasn't doctor who.

I see this argument but I still find UNIT fun. Except in the late 4 era. By the time he's working for UNIT again after quitting twice in The Seeds of Doom it's like 'dump the motherfucker already'.
