Before anyone asks, I can't help you with your taxes unless it's a general question. I'm not a tax accountant, the IRC has changed since I took that part of the test, and frankly I just never liked studying tax accounting.

What made you go into the field? How's your salary?

1) Job security.
2) Not that high tbh because I work for the government. The benefits were too good to pass up, though.

What branch of accounting do you specialize in?

Auditing processes and financials. We (the unit I'm in) make sure no one is doing anything shady, and we write up reports so stakeholders (which in our sector is basically everybody) feel a good level of comfort that the agency/process/whatever is not suddenly just going to go kaboom and result in a loss. We're not required to guarantee anything (for ex., there could be fraud going on that our procedures don't catch), just required to show we were able to give reasonable assurance that everything's looking good.

What is a CPA?

Certified public accountant. It means I put myself through a lot of suffering to pass four exams and worked a certain number of hours on qualifying projects, all to earn a CPA license. Wikipedia explains it better (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certified_Public_Accountant) and has links.
