Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

i don't understand how he gained so much power, though? like, even his own storm troopers don't seem to take him seriously. how does this guy command an army if all he does is fail constantly and throw tantrums? not that he doesn't have advisers obviously, but still... it doesn't make sense why they'd let him rule anything.

i also slightly doubt the goal was to have the audience laughing at him constantly, but, if you can source a quote on that i'll gain some respect for the writing of his character

it's because snoke is the guy pulling the reins. basically, snoke is the true leader of the first order, and kylo ren is kind of like the teacher's pet who gets a lot of power simply because he's snoke's favorite. if you look at the script, it's obvious general hux hates his guts because kylo ren does whatever he wants and hux sees it as an absolute nuisance. when he's unhappy with kylo ren's decisions, he goes and reports directly to snoke instead of hashing it out with kylo, which shows who he sees as the legit leader of the whole operation.

i have no quote for that, since official discussions of the film after it was released are far and few (we just have all the interviews with the actors and writers being tight-lipped about the details of the film), but just based on the writing, acting, and even character design, he's supposed to be underwhelming. for example, darth vader would have never had a scene where the audience was supposed to laugh at stormtroopers reacting to him, and yet kylo did (in that tantrum scene), and that's definitely intentional.

that was hands down the best scene in the movie next to "droid please" omg

Except that Ren technically isn't in charge of anything?

In the visual dictionary, they talk about how Kylo Ren is outside the chain of command- Hux is actually the one in charge. But Hux has been ordered by Snoke to defer to Ren's demands- which is why Hux goes directly to him instead of parsing it out with Ren. Because he's basically having to go to the original source of the orders.

Furthermore, the novelization goes on to explain that a lot of the crew of the Finalizer and Starkiller base are TERRIFIED of him, because they don't know how he's going to lash out. For example, when Mitaka has to deliver the news that they've lost BB-8 on Jakku, he honest to god thinks that Ren's going to behead him right then and there.

Which means he's probably done it before, come to think of it.
