Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

the thing about jasper is that redemption arcs only happen because steven pushes it, because he shows those gems empathy when no one else will, and jasper... sort of got off the wrong foot with him immediately because she showed up, broke his face, basically MURDERED GARNET in front of him as far as he knew, etc.

whereas steven was the first person to try to talk to peridot and was the only person lapis trusted, even with everything that they did. honestly, i feel like if steven even considered jasper redeemable, he would have said something about it before now, especially since he knows lapis is holding her hostage. kid has a good sense about these things, because he really must have known something about peridot the other gems didn't if he continued to try and befriend her throughout everything she did even BEFORE she was caught.

Agreed. The thing about Peridot's arc is that Steven is already pretty eager to trust others. Peridot wanted to save Earth because she was stuck there and didn't want to die; the fact that she wanted to save the Earth at all for any reason made Steven want to trust her and give her a chance. Even before that, After Jail Break, Peridot gradually became kind of goofy and lovable to the audience, even as a villain.

I think the reason that a Jasper redemption arc seems like it would be cheap right now is because she's only really been in two episodes and we don't know anything about her beyond that she gives no fucks about Earth and it can be inferred that she wants to smash Rose Quartz in the face super hard. I think before Catch and Release, the idea of a Peridot redemption arc seemed kind of cheap, too, but they did it okay. I'm pretty iffy myself on the idea of Jasper being "redeemed" but I can fathom it working. I don't think she'll really become a Crystal Gem, but I can see her possibly turning against homeworld.

honestly, i'm not sold on either jasper or lapis becoming crystal gems, redemption arc or not. lapis REALLY doesn't buy into that shit from what we've seen, and the only reason peridot did was by sheer accident, because Yellow Diamond didn't agree with her and she took exception to that.

it depends on what the show wants to tilt towards- if you believe lauren zuke, they've planned this peridot arc long before she'd even appeared, so the crystal gems were always going to end up being a "five man band," and lapis and jasper throw that off-kilter. neither of them add anything to the group dynamic, and ultimately a show with seven main characters can get bulky, especially when the episodes are only 11 minutes long and there's still a lot of side characters who often get episodes dedicated to them.

with Garnet as the leader, Steven as the heart, Pearl as finesse/tactics/sort-of-Lancer for Garnet, Amethyst as the muscle, and Peridot as the brains/expert on Homeworld as it is CURRENTLY, you have a balanced team, and that's pretty close to how shows geared towards kids tend to stick.

however, the show could be building to an all-out war with Homeworld again, so five gems aren't gonna be enough to deal with that, so even if jasper and lapis go off to do their own shit, they'll probably come back to deal with the war effort.
