Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Please tell me someone else is watching this because I am so into it. We dont even have TV but after reading about it on one of the tech blogs my partner follows and then it came up on a STEM feed again we found out SyFy is also airing it online. And since both articles really hyped it and we respect the sources we decided okay fine lets see what newest nonsense SyFy churned out...

And what the what! We binged everything we had missed in one weekend so we could watch Tuesdays episode. Its seriously solid. Great acting, good story, solid sets mixed with CGI. Bonus points they havent completely been garbage with physics and science principles. I mean its not perfect but it is plenty believable and given we both work in related fields and can suspend our disbelief without issue? For SyFy that's like ten slam dunks. I don't care if I date myself here but so far this series is like the Space Jam of slam dunks even. (Oh hey and space related metaphor there for a double whammy. Awesome.)

The last time they produced anything half as enjoyable for me was when they could still spell their name.

SA - Spoilers in this one.

Okay so I will say though, my one biggest hesitation about letting myself love it enough to gush to everyone and their brother before I see how the first season wraps? (Especially since the second season got picked up so there's less need to get viewing numbers up to avoid a premature cancellation.) I am definitely hyped on it so far but! I am leery of the text that accompanies the previews for upcoming episodes online and the trailers, since we dont automatically get them in a commercial. We were assuming its some plot by the Belters or what have you but the whole "a threat to ALL humanity" does make me side eye just a bit. And I do know we saw the Martian gal in episode one see the dude screaming in the freaky blue ball in the Scopulis core reactor so the door to WTF has been cracked open from day one.

I just hope it doesnt jump the shark I guess with whatever that angle of the content is? Since so far everything is hard science, political intrigue, and gritty drama. Like how X-Files always had aliens and all kinds of nonsense but the main characters, and even support like Skinner and the Lone Gunmen, were still normal. They investigated or became abnormal or whatever. But then you got a main character the last season or so who was psychic or saw ghosts or whatever and that felt just so put on and over the top in spite of the X-Files always having had that content?

Thats first show I can think of that felt like it had a concept in the wings all the time but when it became front and center in a bad way it killed enjoyment for me but I am sure there are other, better comparisons. I cant completely articulate my worry here but I guess its just. SyFy this show is so solid and usually a first season takes time to get momentum and this didnt need that time so kudos. But dont take that win and ruin a good thing.

i've read the books the show's based on, and being as vague as possible, it's way more about conspiracies and secret plots than it is about psychic powers and hot alien babes.

Awesome! Glad to have I inspired you. It's been ages since I got into a show I made a point to catch up on weekly and didn't just wait to binge once it was released so hopefully this gets you sucked in the same way and we see you back.

oh man, i didn't think this show would even be a blip on people's radar, but i LOVE IT I'M GLAD TO SEE IT MENTIONED HERE.

tbh it's the world-building elements that completely drew me in at first, i just think that this universe is such a well-done mish-mash of familiar and unfamiliar, and how i would see a community like the Belters actually evolve after generations spent in space I LOVE ALL THESE DETAILS

and then the characters turned out to be surprisingly solid? finally, the whole political conspiracy angle - so far, this show is very much a win for me.

Oh man the world building is definitely a win. I love looking for the little things in that vein every episode too and know when I rewatch it'll be a 'finding even more' sort of adventure. And you're right, so far the Belter culture has been the most interesting to me too. I definitely like the random scenes in the work ships, noodle shops, and just wandering through the Ceres housing districts and the like because it feels so real.

Are you caught up/keeping up each week? We don't always watch on Tuesday or Wednesday but we try to watch by the time the next episode is up on SyFy. They don't seem to get the streams up in 24 hours every time, sometimes it takes a little longer but we usually are watching on the weekend anyways.
