Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

other than him being friends with the mod account, and a character there that he is known for (laguna) you mean

the thing is ff8 is a pretty popular game and there have been multiple laguna players over the years, and he is a pretty major figure in the game.

if you can link it to that yaoi character from that one yaoi game i'd believe you because i have never seen anyone but ken rp from that.

this is suck a weak argument and it'd be soooooooooooooooo easy to go "hi ken"

but i'm just gonna take the high road and point out that ff in general is pretty rare these days as the franchise is (finally and grateful) drying up. used to be sephiroths and clouds were as common as snapes but now i only see the occasional one, and it's been years since i saw any ff8 player that wasn't a seifer. ff8 wasn't the black sheep 9 was but saying it's "pretty popular" is a huge stretch

i legit don't know what circles you're hanging out in, but plenty of people i know still play from ff8 and ff in general (myself included). they're usually not actively playing them or actively advertising that they play them, because they prefer playing newer canons in games, but i know that the most surprising of people will pull out the most minor of characters from the series if it's brought up. mostly in a 'oh i have this old muse' way. a ff8 muse isn't as rare as you think it is, especially considering how squall was in KH, and someone playing from ff isn't as rare as you think - last year, there was a fairly active musebox for ff14 characters for a while and while it's not active anymore, i know a lot of the players and they're continuing to play with them in psls, memes, and even games.

it's also really funny to say that ff8 wasn't pretty popular, because it's one of the best selling FF titles. in 2003 it was the second-most sold game, right under FF7, according to SE: http://www.jp.square-enix.com/ir/e/explanatory/download/0000-000000000000-01.pdf#page=27 i expect that it's sold even more since then, what with being re-released on the psn and pc.

also lmao at saying that the franchise is 'drying up'. at this point ffxiv is super-popular (the last time they revealed active subscriptions, it was about a year or so ago and they had about 2 million active accounts at the time and if anything, the game's population is bigger than ever) and square is doing a really tidy business porting the main games onto pc, tablet, and mobile devices, not to mention running their own mobage game. the franchise isn't drying up but moving in a new direction as what worked 20 years ago (create a mainstream console game every other year or so and cash in) isn't working anymore as time, development, and costs have rapidly increased for console games. they've said that if XV is a flop like 13 and 14 1.0 was, they're probably going to stop making triple-AAA titles for consoles, but they already have experience in developing mobile games and they're already exploring a different way of delivering console games with the episodic releases of the FF7 remake.

final fantasy is far from drying up and square is going to milk every single drop it can get. there's an upcoming FF spinoff game being localized this year for the 3DS, the new Dissidia fighting game, another FF spinoff for the PS4, and god knows how many other secret FF projects they have in the works.

"exploring a different way of releasing console games"

ANON. I was with you until then, but lmfao you're kidding right? More like "exploring a new way to release incomplete games". It's the state of vidya today, this is just a step beyond dlc bullshit.

i like to be optimistic, plus pissing and moaning isn't going to change how things ultimately are. i'm also of a 'wait and see' type of person because either 1. it's going to suck 2. they make it work, somehow or 3. they scrap that plan and go with something completely different. either way, at this point, being mad about the current state of gaming isn't going to change anything unless i have a plan (and some sort of multimedia empire behind me). i'm also trying to interpret their news, since i know they've repeatedly stated that if 15 fails, they're giving up on consoles... but i doubt they'd scrap the 7 remake if that's the case.

and tbh, releasing incomplete games isn't really a new thing to the the video game industry (see daikatana and a shitton of mediocre to shitty video games starting from its creation) but it's one that's become noticeable, as instead of turning to game studios for funding, developers are trying to use crowdsourcing as a alternative way to make the games they want and feel that fans want. and when a customer already has their dollar involved and invested, they're going to pay more attention to the outcome when it's not BIG EURO TRUCK RIG SIMULMATOR 1999 with five texures and steve forgot to code the brakes. i mean, i remember reading in a pc gamer back in the 90s about a game they were reviewing didn't have the water textured and it was a gray mass of polygon splines.

does no one remember walking past the rows of video games for pc and consoles with dubious titles like BIG GAME HUNTER and VIRTUAL POOL while they were growing up?

The Laguna is played by the genderswapped Genesis player. Who has enough history in other games to not be Ken. They're another one in the weird but harmless category.
