Had an idea borrowed from The 100 but not necessarily based off of it. The premise of that show, essentially, is the human race went to space to avoid the fallout of nuclear war. After almost 100 years, space life sucks and they need to find a way to keep the human race alive so they send 100 convicts (under the age of 18 in the show) to earth to see if it's inhabitable now. Shit happens. They aren't alone, blah blah.

So what I'd take from this is the idea of people being plucked from their home universes into space place. Except the NPCS aren't doing it for them, they're trying to use their device to pull a specific engineer back into their reality and everyone (players) are just excess. Rather than kill them, they send them to earth because lol no room in space.

The game would have to have a definitive end or cycles, but I fear it doesn't have much to spur it on except "survive in the wild, at least until you find NPCs who live on earth".

tbh i'd stick closer to theshow premise. they pulled these people on purpose to use them as tester monkeys and send them to the planet. the "you're excess" thing seems kind of unnecessary.

i think in order to marry both what you have in mind + keeping it closer to the premise so some have an idea of what to expect in the game, how about this:

pretend they're bringing in the people they don't want are being pulled in in order to go on a 'special mission' to test out the earth's environment. in return of doing it, they'll get sent back home after the fix the 'problems' with the device. maybe through inter-dimensional magic bullshit, the characters brought in have immunity to the space radiation infecting the earth that could still kill the people who are in space. they claim they're making something that will make them immune to the earth radiation soooooon but whether or not it works or is real is up to you.

that way they're making use of the people and you don't just have 'lol no space for you go to this dangerous earth that can kill you' thing going on because… that's kind of silly tbh?

in order to have definitive cycles at least so players have something to do, have the npcs go 'btw we can't give you much stuff so you have x months to do y before the z comes and you die' and maybe npcs could secretly send stuff to use them as guinea pigs like an anon above said. 'here's some food supply! whoops that stuff is infected and causes an illness none of us have a known cure for. maybe u guys should probably find a cure to it asap.'
