Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I WOULD BE INTERESTED OP i never had a chance to play in the old DR as much as i wanted to and i've always regretted that

i remember a couple of years ago [community profile] pokedrifting was a thing and it was semi-popular before it died pretty abruptly, but i really have no idea why?

anyway DRs are obviously a dying RP form these days but you know what they say, you gotta be the change you wanna see. i don't have any reason to play my pokemon muses these days but i miss them a lot.

Well shit, this brings back memories.

It died p much because people stopped playing in it, I think? We had a bunch of events and more setting details lined up but never got to unveil them because activity just...dropped.

The island was going to end up "docking" in various Pokemon universes (mostly based on standing canons with tiny differences) to provide more places to explore and introduce different problems for people to play with and solve...I think I still have some of the setting docs. Not sure I still have the password to the mod acct/email though.

Pokedressing was my favorite rp experience back in the day! Along with pokedrifting mentioned above, there was [community profile] poketesting's attempt but it died pretty quickly too.

Pokedressing's setting gave enough locations for ideas but left details to players to allow for unfettered play, which I think pokedrifting and poketesting did a pretty good job of emulating. But pokedressing had a community feeling that made people stay, I think, and the successive attempts unfortunately failed there. Part of that may be because the rp scene has changed so much (less room for wacky antics, etc), but part of it may be that the successive DRs didn't have enough to get the ball rolling. Maybe things like CR planning posts, player plot suggestion posts, and intro/friending things from the get-go would help?

Since DRs don't have AC, they have to have enough interesting elements to keep activity going. So while the abovementioned open, minimally-modded setting is useful, I think some more active elements from the mods at the beginning could help get people get more comfortable in the area, too. Creativity within constraints and all that.

I'm rambling, sorry! But I miss pokemon DRs and would happily join another one.

no no, i'd love to hear rambly input! i've never run a game or dressing room before (save for helping to plan something that never came through) and i was still green to the rp scene when pokedressing was alive and well, so i'd appreciate advice from someone with more experience.

if i can get people who would be interested in forming a small mod team, maybe this could happen!

I was part of PD when all the legendaries were around. Definitely agree on the community thing, with people drawing art and making Sims of characters and quoting stuff from roleplays in icons and stuff.

Anyway, having an entry for player plots right out the gate may help - immediate CR potential, drama to kick stuff into gear, avoidance of 'I'm here now, now what' stagnation...so like you said, yeah. The setting not being all-providing could help, I dunno.

No need to apologize about rambling, anon, because I think I could ramble about dressing rooms for a long time. Dressing rooms were some of my most positive roleplaying experiences back on Livejournal and I'm forever a little sad that it's difficult to keep them going on Dreamwidth.

I agree with you that PD back on LJ had a really strong sense of OOC community. Between all the posts on the main comm (and when the DR was going strong, there were a lot of posts popping up every day) there were a lot of opportunities to talk OOC, through memes and introductions. I think we even got to the point where there were so many memes that they needed to be put on a schedule...? Haha, it was so goofy. A lot of that OOC communication has drifted to Plurk on DWRP, which... isn't exactly ideal for a dressing room, where, by design, not everyone knows each other.

IMO, all three dressing rooms had good starts. If you check the number of comments on the intro logs and the posts, there's certainly interest in these kinds communities. The problem is holding that interest! I had a fairly hands-off approach when making poketesting: my hope was that, as people played, the setting would continue to expand and grow. And it... did, a little! People made stuff, but interest eventually dwindled.

In hindsight, I don't think that was the best idea; I created the community hoping that it would grow in the way the LJ dressing rooms used to, without thinking too much about how RP had changed in the move from LJ to DW. If I could do it again, I would probably do stuff like this:

- Make more IC "mingle" or event posts. The pokedressing mods were actually great about this--if you check the community, a lot of the mingle posts were put together by the mods.
- Honestly just post more in general. I think it's pretty common for players to not want to be the first one in the pool, so having regular posts of characters just doin' stuff would be good to show that "hey it's okay to just goof around in this space".
- Create more opportunities for OOC communication, through introduction, CR, or just plain goof-off memes.
- Advertise, advertise, advertise. I did a little bit of advertising on Plurk, but I think it'd be worth it to have something up in the Game Advertisements section of this meme. I'd also make a public plurk, so we could get the word around more that way.
- get an image for the profile... probably...

What do you guys think? What are some things that can help keep the ball rolling for a dressing room?
