while there are publishers who can be stupidly reluctant to localize otoge despite them having no problems localizing galge, i don't think that's the problem here

This is rich considering who this is coming from. Normally I'd be sympathetic because god knows that otome games rarely get translated but not with this person.

They're someone who threw a fit when it was revealed that Mangagamer had licensed Ozmafia and threatened to boycott it. And IIRC, they're still not going to buy it. They wanted to try to convince Poni-pachet to give the license to someone else because they object some of the stuff that Mangagamer has licensed.

Which fine, whatever, I can totally understand not caring or being put off by some of the stuff they've released. But when you're actively complaining about how otome games never get translations and don't want to support one of the few companies that are actively trying to bring them over then I'm finding it a bit hard to sympathize with you.

They also pitched a fit over Mangagamer saying that NTY could appeal to gay men when they were advertising it and complained about how women can't get anything to themselves. They also got into a argument with Good Haro over it.

And they also had another tantrum when it was revealed Kindred Spirits was going to be released uncensored on Steam claiming that it's now a porn store.

Basically they're a very unpleasant person.

Wow, I remember seeing an argument that happened something along those lines on Good Haro's Twitter last year. Never expected it to be the same person.

while, to my knowledge, gay/bi men in the west are a pretty underrepresented crowd when it comes to visual novels outside of some fan translation stuff (main reason why coming out on top was so successful) and they definitely do deserve having more games that appeal to them

i can understand not wanting companies to go "i don't think picking up a game targeted towards women will sell unless it can appeal to this other audience too!" when licensing bl games and otoge because that normally doesn't go as well as people think

though tbf in nty's case, i think mangagamer did get localization requests for it from bl fans and the translator is a huge fan of the game so it's not like the choice to pick it up was out of the blue. it's just that nty happened to appeal to a crowd (gay/bi men) beyond its target audience (straight/bi women).

Your thoughts were basically the same ones I had when the whole argument went down. Gay/bi men being underrepresented when it comes to visual novels targeting them apoarently don't matter to this person though.

And while I think Mangagamer did admit that one of the reasons that they decided to pick up NTY was because it could have a slightly broader appeal, it really wasn't the only reason. Good Haro is a huge fan and it did indeed get requests from BL fans too so it wasn't that they went and said they were only getting it because of that.

I think it having appeal to a different crowd beyond its target audience was a bit of a bonus.

and if one wants to think of it this way, even one dislikes the fact that nty also happens to gay/bi men it also happened to sell for mangagamer. if there are games that they do want then they could throw those suggestions towards mangagamer's way.

Exactly. Since it sold well, they're always taking suggestions for what try to license next.

And as for the link, I'd have to give it a reread to see. I just remember Good Haro talking about how parade thought it could appeal to women and bi/gay men when it waa originally released but my memory could be wrong.

huh, really? i know in the q&a post i linked that the director and the artist (who happen to be both women) said they like guys with body hair and bulk which is why the body hair options exist, but i never heard about the other thing you mentioned.

i wouldn't be surprised if it was true though since i heard something about how a lot of gay and bi guys in japan were really excited for nty when the guys were first revealed. some marketing from parade's end towards them probably helped with that.

Yeah, I'd look for it but looking for the tweets is a pain especially on mobile. I may just be jumping off of what you said about gay/bi men in Japan being excited for NTY because I heard that too.

I wouldn't be surprised if parade did try to market the game to them especially with it being their first BL title.
