Rundown:

rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.

this is going to sound stupid but... how strange would it be to pm someone asking if they were interested in a psl? i've seen their character around in a game and their threads have always been excellent, both well-written and ic, but i'm worried it'd come across as weird rather than complimentary if i say that. plus the character i want to play against theirs is already taken in-game, and i don't want to accidentally step on any toes.

i mean, i could always use a sock and give it a try that way. i just don't want to seem sketchy :(

because for every one person like you, there's another one who goes "ew overinvested creep" at the slightest hint of excitement

idk man, i've seen people freaking out on plurk because they got a pm. like, just at the fact that they got one at all. i've been in ljrp for years, and there's been a definite increase in people who behave like this, so it has me thinking twice before i contact anyone privately.

A sock would come off sketchier to me than a journal that seems like it actually sees use. Just say who you are and who you play and ask them if they'd like to play a PSL with the two characters because you really enjoy their take on X and would like to play with them sometime. Have a basic scenario in mind but don't get overly detailed right off the bat (it will probably be easier to springboard from an idea based off the canon, assuming both your characters are canonmates). If they say no thanks, take it graciously.

yeah don't do the sock thing. they might think it's an old stalker/grudgewanker they have or something weird like that.

oh damn, i hadn't considered that. you're right. thank you (and the other anon in this subthread!) for that point of view. also, ty for the ideas for the pm itself! i admit, i was blanking apart from the initial "hi i think you play a rly gr8 X" so this is really helpful.

it's not strange at all. it's not weird to have seen them around or to like their threads (and they'll probably be flattered by that!) and since the character you want to play is taken in game, a psl makes sense.

if you step on any toes i would say that's a warning sign, anyway. people who only want to play against one person's version of a particular character are usually (but not always) overinvested.

i appreciate the kind words, anon. half my worry was based on the fact that the character i wanted to play was taken in game, so your take on this is honestly a big reassurance. thank you!

I'll play against any version of character X who tags me, but when it comes to shipping I only do it with one person whose interpretation of and headcanons for character X perfectly complement my own. I also trust them not to spring weird shit on me in threads without discussing it first. I've known tons of players who are the same with shipping and none of them were crazy overinvested soulbonders. People are allowed to have preferences. Just something for OP to take into consideration if the player does turn them down.

Some of you are just way too interested in assuming things.

I only play against one person's version of a particular character because I have limited time to rp. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be flattered to get a PM asking if I'd be up for another PSL.

if you're that worried about seeming creepy, try asking them to do a meme with you instead? that's less commitment than a psl at first and if you hit it off then you can casually bring the idea of a psl up later.

I've had someone do this and it was lovely. Go for it, anon. I'd definitely recommend PMing them with the character journal you want to play against them, though. Like above anon said, a sock might seem more fishy.

thank you for the positive input, anon! and yeah, that definitely makes sense. i'm glad i posted here tbh i was just about ready to go the sock route.

I'd agree with don't do a sock. At least PM them with a journal you use, could even be the character you want to play.

Also another thing you may want to be careful on is suggesting any sort of ships or kinks unless you know this player ships it or is cool with the kink. I don't see an issue with approaching them to ask about maybe some gen threads to start off with though and then both of you can see how well you mesh together before jumping into shipping or smut.

true! i only really considered a sock because i was nervous, but looking at the replies here i was clearly about to make a mistake, haha.

and yeah, i will keep that in mind for sure. i mean, i'd be equally excited with any kind of rping, but i'm certainly going into this with the mindset of gen stuff. generally thank you for the feedback, anon!

Not weird at all, and I guess I may be in the minority about not caring if the PM's from a sock. Several of my PSLs are with players who have only ever talked to me via socks or newly made character journals, and they've all been cool people.

Getting a request like this along with a compliment on my threads would totally make my week, personally. You should go for it. Good luck!

I wouldn't care if it was a sock either! I can see why some people might, but it's not that different from when we use socks in the pairings and kinks you want to play threads imo. I'm kinda surprised that so many people advised against it, actually.

are you interested in playing gen or shipping with them?

someone did this to me before and it absolutely made my day. just because they're playing with someone who you play in a game doesn't mean they're clicking on the right level or anything. if you wind up stepping on any toes, then bullet dodged, right?

tbh i think more people should push outside their little baby zones and approach people for threads instead of this shaking and crying about approaching people. (not saying you are, op, just dwrp culture in general has become so scared of everything.)
