Soap Opera game
(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 12:45 am (UTC)(link)Pretty much over dramatic slice of life to the extreme. Everything excessive, nothing needing terribly too much logic. Full of ridiculous coincidences, dramatic tragedies, and lots of comas.
-everyone needed to have at least 3 ridiculous connections to current characters like "Long lost lover" or "new maid with a secret" (probably only one at the start, or have some NPCs early character can make back story with.) Before app rounds there'd be sorta a combine ATP/RP with me/TDM where current players and new ones can plot out connections to each other. And mods could keep an eye out for cliquishness this way, if suzy and bobby and jan all only make connections among each others characters. You wouldn't be required to do anything with these, but it gives a strong, ridiculous start and would help weed out people who don't "get" the feel/idea.
-And all face twins would really be long lost twins/triplets/quadruplets
-And every month or so depending on the pacing there'd be random ridiculous tropes assigned (you won a billion dollars! Your pool boy was murdered! Your dog cured cancer! your husband ran to mexico with the maid and the fortune!)
-Any hiatuses are comas. Amnesia optional.
-Any drops are dramatic deaths that got 100% retconned when someone else apped in but still happened. Players can use "selective amnesia" to pick and chose how much or little of old CR/situation they wanna use (And it would be expected to go both ways.)
-people have babies all the time, and you can always app in as that baby, mysteriously suddenly old enough to interact with with no explanation. or it can just disappear. w/e.
But instead of tdm you'd have like backstory plotting memes for new players
I had no idea if I wanted it to be AU or a Jam Jar with, idk, some mischief god who loves telenovela's playing director or something like that. both could go interesting ways, but the later, tho I liked the idea of a memory loss type thing where people slowly realized how ridiculous shit was, I couldn't figure out any sort of meta plot that seemed darker and more intense than the idea justified. Then again if anyone goes for this, and you want it to go there, knock your self out!
It'd have to have a lot of built up places for communication to run smoothly. It'd probably attract some who weren't into it for fun but for serious barbie doll playing, but hopefully everything would end up so pushed up to 11 that they'd just settle into it.

set on a tropical island
the setting is an island that's like a small version of Hawaii, or any island in the pacific. there's natives who have kept their culture alive to varying degrees, and a couple of different places on the island. there's a town that pretty much looks like a standard modern small town, with houses and an apartment building or two. there's also a more traditional village with huts that mostly lives off the sea. when the game begins, the natives are confused by the presence of the newcomers, but tend to assume they're here for a reason and give them as much help as politeness demands. this could change, based on how players interact with NPCs.
incentive-based or consent-based sex game
no fuck-or die aspect at all. maybe the occasional event that gives characters more of a push, for those who need it, but it'll be opt-in. the island and its gods are powered by sex, so the more sex you have, the better your food is, the nicer your accommodations are, etc. a person who refuses any intimate contact at all lives in a rundown studio apartment that's got pieces falling off the walls, orange water, the food that appears in their fridge is cheap quality and a couple days past the sell-by date at all times. everything is functional enough to survive on, but just barely. someone who fucks a lot, their place slowly transforms into a nicely-decorated two-bedroom with fancy rich people food in the fridge, etc.
extra AC for bonuses
apart from the above always happening in the background, you can get items brought from home, services from the natives, items brought from somewhere else, the opportunity to affect the setting like starting a business or going on a quest for the gods, or whatever else i/players think of, by completing game events, completing puzzles, or submitting extra AC. theoretically, this will ICly be for having a lot of sex but i will probably accept gen AC for it, and if someone seems to be abusing it (they're clearly not having sex with anyone but submitting enough gen AC to be getting incentives) then i'll re-evaluate or talk to that player. but i think this is minor enough that we can go by the honor system.
local gods
there is no apparent government in place when players first arrive (they could change this by setting one up), and if asked, all the natives give variations on "the gods tell us what to do." the gods don't show it to players (at least not for awhile) but they're just as confused as the players and the natives as to what the hell is happening and why these dimensional travelers are coming here. they have a king god or some type of boss who is presumed responsible for this but hasn't said anything to them. i'm thinking 3 or 4 god NPCs and then maybe one priest and a native from each town as important NPCs. i do want to keep their involvement to a minimum, since over-reliance on NPCs has certainly bested plenty of people in the past.
puzzles
i don't really know what to do with this or how to implement it but it seems like a cool idea. think like that old nickelodeon show, legends of the hidden temple, that's what i mean by puzzles. some risk of failure, some consequence if you fail, but not meant to be a hugely stressful game mechanic.
other stuff
there would be a hard 18+ rule for characters, and no children or teenagers on the island. the natives are weirdly tight-lipped about this. CR AUs probably allowed, but other AUs probably not allowed. OCs allowed, characters with very little canon allowed, fandom OCs allowed only if the main characters of the canon have no close connection to them -- you can app a jaeger pilot, but not raleigh's mother. you can app a hogwarts professor, but not harry potter's long-list sister.

- Monthly events where chars visit a place like modern day cities on earth, alien world, canon worlds from video games/anime/series/movies, or other places. Players will have some voting input.
- AC bonuses in the form of powers, supplies or IC-knowledge.
- Unseen but heard and messaged NPCs
Setting is an abandoned winter Star Trek base. The LCARS system can be figured out by most modern day or hacker characters that can activate the replicators and bring online the basic life sustaining operations. Chars will need to figure out how to get the power back on, how to survive and heat the base, and how to not end up with it all ending in bloodshed.
Mirrors
Star Trek has a mirror universe where opposite versions of the canon characters exist. When applying, players will get to choose if they want the mirror or canon version of a character.
NPCs
There are two voices that will speak or text to chars. One could be called 'good' and the other 'evil', but those are flexible terms in a survival situation. Morals might be forgotten when the voice tells a character to kill one person so they can get a feast for the rest of their people. Or warmer clothes. Or information on what the next warp window might be.
Enemies
By no means are they alone. Depending on how the NPCs are treated or which areas of the frozen outpost are explored, new enemies could be discovered. Imagine a flood of toothy spiders rushing in. Hope your warriors are at the front. Those met in other 'worlds' might reappear in the winter station, stalking the halls for further victims. Imagine meeting Pyramid Head or carnivorous plants on the way to the bathroom.
Story
How much a character learns about what is going on is up to the player. If their character is the stay in the outpost and tend the homefires sort, they won't find out too much unless told. Those who venture into the wormhole worlds or explore sections of the outpost as they open up will find out much more... maybe a way to get home.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)For setting, whether jamjar or AU, I would probably go with something with at least a little bit of fantasy-based magic and monsters because I enjoy those and there seems to be a call towards them (and a lot of fantasy settings in media follow the pursuits of bloodlines anyways!) Each chapter would put the characters facing a threat, whether recurring from generation to generation, or building one threat upon another depending on if the current chapter is able to solve the dilemma at hand.
This would NOT be a smut-center game, however; at the end of each chapter, players can determine OOCly how their characters might settle down, with whom, what offspring they might have had, all that after 'The End' business, and the next chapter would open on chosen offspring characters or new characters. (Applications for new characters ought to be open from month to month as well, as it seems silly to leave apps to once every 4-6 months!) If characters are inhuman or incapable of having children, it might be possible to pick up a friend's character's child so long as it's been negotiated between players... or I don't know if you want to get up to some weird funky business to create some monster transformers cyborg baby, or man-behind baby maybe there's magic for that. The point being that ICly I don't plan on having that go into detail and I'd expect the playerbase to determine what would be the most fun.
The catch to this is that offspring characters would be required to app in at the beginning of a new chapter, with a specific application form similar to the more detailed versions given to OC's, and careful attention paid to ensure they're not all sparkly snowflake childs. They ought to have some balance so that they don't wreck the fun for others.
So, if you're interested in something like this, would you prefer a jamjar, or an AU? Would you like to see any particular setting tidbits or plot tidbits? Any suggestions to keep things balanced between players?
Sandboxy MMO nexus game
(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)I'm the person who came here a while ago with the idea about a Greed Island-based game -- I've been writing up and revising a bunch of stuff and I think it might work better (and be much more appealing to non-HxH fans) as a more generalized original MMO style setting.
That said, here are some of the elements I'm pretty sure it's going to include:
- Nexus style sandbox: no major overarching plot, although there might be event chains and there will be quests available for characters to play out. The quests available would change every month, and might involve serious/action stuff like hunting down bandits or monsters as well as funny/cracky stuff like volunteering as a guinea pig for a mad scientist (for a set of weird temporary effects) or classic Obnoxious Fetch Quests. Characters get a "teleport ring" that can transport them to the game and back to their home world.
- No CRAU: the nexus style doesn't play well with CRAU unless we're going to open ongoing game crossovers with every game someone apps a CRAU from, and ... you see the problem there.
- Limited setting: island split into regions corresponding with different standard fantasy tropes (the "magic" region, the "wilderness ranger" region, the "physical fighter" region, etc.) with some kind of in-game transportation or teleportation mechanism to allow characters to easily interact.
- No network: a snail mail system run via IC inboxes, notice boards in each town, all other interaction is in person
- No humanization (optional size-down for characters who are normally 60 feet tall), powers capped to weed out the "I CAN BLOW UP THE WHOLE PLANET!!" stuff but otherwise not nerfed
- Quick resurrection every time with no death penalties, except that all of your clothing, armor, weapons, and anything else you were carrying will remain with your dead body (which withers down to a skeleton instantly, WoW style) and you have to loot your own corpse to get your stuff back... sometimes under the nose of the big scary thing that killed you, whoops. I know the "no permadeath" element is controversial, but I feel like in an ICly voluntary game with no IC real-world rewards, very few characters would be willing to run any risks if they know death is real and permanent. OOCly, having no permadeath or death penalties also encourages people to throw their characters into risky situations or get into fights with other characters.
- PVP elements: you can snipe and steal shit from other players because the items stick with the body.
- Freedom for characters to make big impacts on the game world: blowing up parts of cities, killing NPCs, etc.
- Some fun, cracky stuff: characters who die wake up wearing Bermuda shorts and ugly Hawaiian shirts, special holiday quests and decorations, cute humanoid animal NPCs, and so on.
(Commentary on the above ideas is highly welcome!)
Here are some things I still need feedback on, because I could go either way but have no idea how they might play to the DWRP community in general:
- How detailed should classes be? Should it be left to a handwavey "you can learn to do stuff like this in these particular places" or should there be a specific hard-wired list of classes with different abilities and bonuses available as levels go up? Or something in between?
- How detailed should leveling-up be? I was considering a Ryslig-style system where everyone gets a level up for meeting AC, and bonus level ups for higher amounts of AC, but that would require the more detailed class system and could bake in some annoying "you have to be in the game X number of months before you can do anything cool" issues.
- Should AU and canon OC characters (I'm not talking "Harry Potter's long lost twin sister Demonia Starlight Raven Potter" here; I'm talking more "OCs made based on WoW or tabletop settings") be allowed?
- Should there be some kind of IC reward system, and how detailed should it be?
- Should all the quests be things that players can actually play out step by step with a mod working as "GM" (playing the monsters, providing NPC dialogue and random events), should easy quests be left up to the players with the epic ones requiring step by step playing out with a mod GM, or should they all be left up to the players? Should mod GMing be an option for quests that are left up to players?
- Anything else you can think of you'd want to see or especially want not to see in a game like this?

Except the NPCS aren't doing it for them, they're trying to use their device to pull a specific engineer back into their reality and everyone (players) are just excess. Rather than kill them, they send them to earth because lol no room in space.
The game would have to have a definitive end or cycles, but I fear it doesn't have much to spur it on except "survive in the wild, at least until you find NPCs who live on earth".
