Too slow

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

To those anons claiming there's too much SoL in the game, what kinds of events would you like to see happening more often? Can you please be specific?

Personally I'd love to see some torches and pitchforks action from the NPCs. Maybe have someone leading them that's clever enough to realize that even a crowd couldn't take monsters head on, but goes for things like hit and run tactics, etc. Hell, they don't even need to be trying for a kill, they could just be trying to harass monsters enough so that the NPCs' neighborhood is too much of a hassle to raid.

Yes. A little more hostility would be great. Maybe the people of Vandare have had enough of the random killings? Maybe they'll come to the conclusion that pamphlets and goodwill didn't work, and some of them will begin hunting monsters instead?

Bavan's still messing itself over monsters, so I doubt they care.

Or how about Rota? The monsters showed up, and some of them killed livestock or residents. If they're so close-knit, I doubt they'd let that slide.

The thing that makes me reluctant with this right now is it'll descend fast into having no safe haven for the monsters. Once the locals start rebelling, say good-bye to jobs and housing ICly because it'd be a way to get at the monsters and who'd want to house potential killers. Nevermind that once it's done, there's not really any going back.

The NPC mindset should change a little though. It doesn't make sense for it to remain the same as it had at the beginning.

Yes, while everyone else stagnates with chasing their tails and rolling around in catnip.

Oh, I'm not saying it shouldn't. I'm just wondering how to balance it so that playing in the game doesn't become an absolute chore because characters will have resources cut off so quickly in what would be most logical for people to do.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it has to be a rigid catch-all dichotomy of "we hate monsters" or "we should protect them". I think, realistically speaking, there would be a cultural divide between monster-haters and monster-sympathizers, perhaps jarring enough on a social scale that all the monster-sympathizers move to one (or establish a new) town, and the others flee to another...

perhaps events involving that cataclysmic divide could happen. the more player characters support the sympathizers, the stronger the sympathizer-town would be; haters could try to develop ways of destroying sympathizers and/or monsters en masse, etc. etc. or building their town in a way that would make it hazardous/harder for monsters to hunt them.

I dunno if this sounds like SoL or POLITICKS??? IN MY MONSTER GAEM???, but I figured I'd throw my ideas out there.

Not one of the SoL complainers, but I'd like to see the main plot get back on track. It feels like it was largely abandoned after the December event, which never got any closure to begin with because the actual plot-advancing thread was dropped and no IC reveal/announcement of the result was ever made.

The mods dropped the ball on the main plot. It was just badly done and then this wave of generic horror gimmicks didn't help.

most players don't even remember what that is

This is a very good point. I'm hoping the mods will return to the main plot this month.

i'm a little annoyed that thread was never responded to by the mods to be honest.

I wish something would be done to give death more weight.

In a world where people are going berserk and killing one another, most characters are brushing it off like it's nothing. They die, they come back, they make a quirky network post, and that's that. I think that sucks a lot of the horror out of the game. Why should our characters be scared of anything, when killing and being killed has no significant consequences?

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
death is given more weight. after the second time, characters begin to forget that they were human

i just don't think that's happened yet

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, really? I've got a new longterm goal for my character.

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm aware of that (reading the FAQ, it looks like it'd take 4+ deaths, not 2), but the problem remains that a lot of characters are ICly taking it lightly.

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Why wouldn't they if they haven't hit the consequences yet and it seems they just come back...?

Re: RYSLIG

IDK, if someone murdered me I'd be pretty traumatised.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
my bad, i could have sworn the consequences hit upon the third death

i don't think characters would ICly take death seriously if they think they come back consequence-free. obviously if people start forgetting major canon events after a few deaths, characters will be more likely to take things seriously

Re: ayrt

Not everyone comes from a big cast, or talks about canon events every day, though. Something like memory loss can stay hidden for a long time.

I'm not there yet, but if I decided to take my character down the multiple death/memloss route, I'd make it a point not to bring up the missing memory for at least a few weeks. When it did come out that my character was missing a chunk, I'd give them a different thing to blame. "I'm missing a memory from that last fog", or "I didn't sacrifice a virgin with everyone else and burned to death - it probably had something to do with that fire."

For me, it's more interesting if characters don't get to know how the game works. I don't want that kind of meta information reaching the ones I play, and will always misdirect them if I have the opportunity. The unknown is the root of tension - the horror of the game loses its essence as soon as we know who the "killer" is, so to speak.
