art/icon question

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
you have an obscure canon character without many visuals.

you're also an artist, so you draw them some expressions specifically to be used for your account's icons.

later you find someone else using that art for icons on their own accounts. are you stepping out of line to ask them to stop?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
No

It's your art, even if it's fanart

nope, not unreasonable at all. they probably didn't realize you drew the icons yourself and assumed it was random fanart or something, most likely they'll take them down if you're nice about it.

Didn't realize? It would be OP's fault if they didn't mark their own icons with something like 'my fanart, do not steal'.

Sure, that doesn't stop certain types of people but at least they'd know upfront that they are using icons without permission.

I always give proper credit to each and every icon. It's not that time consuming.

nope, because it's your own art. you have the right to have a say in how it's used, even if it's fanart.

agreeing with the other anons. if it's your art you have every right to ask them not to use it.

i'd consider you a dick if you did that but still used random fanart from around the web as icons without asking the seperate artists for permission to do so first.

just because you happen to rp as well doesn't mean you're entitled to more respect than the countless japanese fanartists who have their own work subjected to shitty filters in shitty icons every day.

but yeah, if you don't do that, then you aren't stepping out of line asking them to do the same. but given the prevalence of using fanart for icons in dwrp, don't be surprised if they say no, just ignore you, or do both and just leave credit instead.

those Japanese artists would probably ask you to take that shit down if they knew you were using it too

if OP sees it, they're in the right to ask people to stop using it. just because you'd be butthurt about not being able to do whatever you want with someone else's art doesn't mean they're a dick for requesting such.

did you even read their comment

Re: art/icon question

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
tbf it still needed to be said.

and anyway, that's even on the assumption op's own journals make icons out of other artists' art without permission.

yes but they won't listen because nobody here respects fanartists really

people don't respect the copyrights of the original creators so why do random bitches who drew characters they don't own get their wishes catered to

Re: art/icon question

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
original creators would sure as fuck get respect if they C&D everyone using their shit, for roleplay, fanfiction, fanart or otherwise

the fact that they don't do that despite having the power to implies a certain level of consent in these matters. if OP wants to assert their own rights, more power to them.

It's not out of line at all. It's your art that you drew for yourself to use.

Totally within your right to ask.

That said, and I say this as another fanartist, if they thought it was just random fanart and were really polite when I spoke to them about it and willing to take them down, I'd consider letting them use them with credit if it was really that hard to get visuals. It wouldn't really hurt anybody and it'd suck for them to have hardly anything to work with.

But that's charity, not something they're owed. Sometimes I like to throw people a bone. If it bothers you too much tell them to take them down.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it your right to ask them to stop, yes. Although I, personally, feel it's kind of... Not sure how to put this. Someone above used the term 'dick' move, but that's a little harsh.

I don't see any harm in letting someone use the icons, as long as they credit you. I'd think you'd be flattered, I know I would be. I don't understand why you'd want to refuse them to use, if they credit.

If it were a popular character with lots of fanart and canon art, I would say go ahead. The person could easily go find other icons. But seeing as how it's an obscure character with so little art that you yourself had to go make your own, it really is a dick move. Not everyone is artistically talented enough to draw their own icons, and with obscure characters that's pretty much saying 'okay, you don't get to RP them because I say so.' It's totally within your right to ask them to stop, but it's still a dick move.

My question is, why does it bother you that someone else is using icons you made?

there's some fanart out there and a lot of it way better than mine, there just aren't specific expression sets outside my own.

i take commissions, including occasionally for icons. i don't want to be a douche but it represents a lot of time investment on my part, which is why it rubs me wrong.

how does asking someone not to use my art in their icons mean they can't rp a character ... ???

Because there's nowhere else to get icons. Your icons may be the only good ones around. Considering DWRP's general stance on icons, can you really blame them for not wanting to be ripped apart for using the only other stuff they can find? If you make them take down the icons, it's either 'run the risk of ridicule for shitty icons' or 'not RP at all'.

Personally I would ask them to credit (so that you can be recognized for the time and effort you put into drawing them), but let the other player keep using them, especially since you know how hard it is to get half-decent icons in this fandom. It is your work and you have the right to do what you want with it, but as the above anon said, making the other player remove them is a dick move.

i think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on that one because i have to admit that i'm seriously rolling my eyes at the idea of someone being forced into not rping because they want nicer icons.

find a pb that's semi-similar. use other fanart. commission an artist. or just suck it up because anyone not rping with you on the strength of your icons is a dingus anyway.

the reason i asked on here is that i feel like people would flip a table if they found someone using the icons they'd commissioned from an artist? but i wanted to get a general feel for how people feel about this before writing anything up. thank you for the input, i really do appreciate it.

find a pb that's semi-similar. use other fanart.

If those are good enough, then why did you didn't you use them? Why didn't you use other fanart? Why didn't you find a pb that's semi-similar? Because if they're good enough for another player, then they should be good enough for you, right?
