i'm new to the fandom and wondering how cu players mesh with comics players? as someone who's read less than a handful of the comics, i admit to being nervous about playing from the movies even if they're basically an au representation. no harm to play without intimate knowledge of the comics, right?

from what i've seen CU players are either super uptight about it or super inclusive, nowhere really in the middle. I play from 616 and I feel like hey, 616 has fourth walled and interacted with its various multiverses plenty of times, why not keep at it?

so long as you do a quick read over their wiki/comicvine page so you at least know the basics of their 616 counterpart you should be fine.

thanks! what you said about fourth walling in 616 makes sense and is really reassuring to hear.

i'll do as you suggest and glean info. i'm excited to potentially join the marvel playerbase - thanks again!

If you're playing from the movies, it doesn't matter how much, if any, comics knowledge you have. So don't be nervous!

And as a comics player, I'm totally cool with playing with movie people too. I find it fun.

thanks for the vote of confidence! i think comics characters meeting movie characters would make for potentially dynamic and fun interactions. i'm glad to hear people are so cool about that.

i've wondered, though - if every individual series, i.e., the avengers and the x-men, takes place on the same earth, to what extent should each 'group' be aware of the other?

Are you talking about comics or the movies? If it's the comics, all the major characters are pretty much aware of each other. Especially when you have crazy crossovers and stuff all the time. With minor characters, they've probably heard of the A-list heroes (so like for example Rockslide from X-Men should definitely know who Cap is), but the same might not be true the other way around (it depends).

If you mean the movies, all the continuities are separate, thus the characters wouldn't know each other at all. MCU characters shouldn't have the slightest clue about any of the X-Men characters and vice versa. Same goes for Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, etc.

I've played from DCAU and DC Comics, and personally, the meetings of both boil down to "oh god not ANOTHER alternate universe" since ICly characters are pretty used to that shit. It's fun for me on an OOC level on both sides!

MCU and Comics could be treated the same way, theoretically. I know the former doesn't have as much experience, but there's shit like aliens and Thor, so what's to stop them from accepting alternate versions of people they might know soon enough?

Eh, I wouldn't say that necessarily holds for the MCU. Believing in aliens when they're swarming out of a wormhole or beating up giant robots in New Mexico is one thing; there's concrete proof. Believing in alternate universes is a different story, especially since there are a lot of comic elements that straight up don't exist in the movies.

It's definitely possible to play it that way, obviously, but I don't think it's obligatory. And having the character with the less timey-wimey canon slowly come to accept the AU thing over a significant period of time can actually make for some really interesting CR.

As a comics player, some of my very favourite CR has been with movie players. It can be really interesting to see how their expectations are blown/their dynamics are different.

I wouldn't worry about the comics, anon! As you said, the movies are a different universe. It might make it easier to Wiki the characters you aren't familiar with, though, just so you know what to expect. (Marvel has a really extensive one: http://marvel.wikia.com/Main_Page)

Most comics characters are aware of multiple universes and won't be weird about your character not knowing anything from their "past." And as a movies-only player (because the comics are too extensive for me), the reception has been really good. Everyone's been friendly and understanding about how little I know.
