This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. So, this came up in a friend's plurk earlier this week (if you happened to see it you'll know exactly who I am, but whatev) and I received permission to post it here to see if anyone would be interested.

Basically, a game where all the characters are shrunk down and live in the walls of a house or apartment building, "borrowing" things to live, like in The Borrowers/Arrietty. Characters would have to deal with all the difficulties that come with being that small, from avoiding being seen by "big" people, scavenging food, building what they need out of larger materials/objects, and the scary world of bugs/birds/animals, who would act as NPCs.

I really liked the idea so I thought I'd post it. I could see it being a mix of slice-of-life, survival, adventure, and maybe even some crack - there was discussion in plurk about characters arriving in the world via the half-competent summoning of mice trying to appease their mouse gods. (I would really love to see some more lighthearted games around, personally!) Thoughts??

I'd play here, and not just because I love The Borrowers. It sounds adorable and lighthearted, like a good setting for the creativity and scavenger/survival genre I really like in games without being about the apocalypse/zombies/evil godly NPCs.

Do you have any concrete ideas for the setting?

Not yet, no! I basically just posted this to see if there would be any interest. (and it looks like there is, which is awesome!)

But I think that the best setting possible would be one that would allow for characters to go to a lot of different kind of big person locations. So, not a house in the middle of a huge farm, because then you'd only ever be able to explore a farmhouse and its surroundings, but something in the city or in the suburbs. An apartment building, or maybe something like a bustling downtown area that has residential apartments above businesses. That way, characters can get into trouble exploring both homes and other locations like streets, supermarkets, restaurants, schools, etc etc.

I'm down for this as long as heights are scaled! So a 5'2" character and a 6'4" character would still be different sizes, just by millimeters ;)

I'm kind of itching for a game with permadeath, too, and it think it could work well here (unless the mouse sorcerers have some kind of resurrection spell, lol). What about power caps? Or just scaled powers?

We could also go The Indian in the Cupboard route... everyone are action figures magically brought to life?

But yes all in all, I'm excited for this idea! Like another anon said above, I really like survival genres, but I'm kind of tired of the only option for that being grimdark horror games :S this would be a nice change!!

Yes, heights would be scaled! As would powers, too. So, technically, it's both keeping powers and nerfing them. Because, hey, you're still only 2 inches tall. And characters without powers would suddenly have all the abilities that small insects or creatures have - being able to fall from proportionately enormous heights without being injured, being able to lift objects that are several times your own weight, etc.

I considered an Indian in the Cupboard take on it, but I think I'd prefer a setting where "big" people are as much the enemy, or some neutral unstoppable force, as possible. And I like the idea of cute silly mice and birds and bugs helping the characters out (or making their lives harder).

I'm so glad people seem to like it! I've never modded anything before and I know I couldn't do this by myself. If anyone would volunteer to help with it, I'd be down!

A thing to consider: do characters bring anything with them? In particular, weapons could be something of a game-changer (though perhaps not in the way one might think; see, for instance, the Indian in the Cupboard books). Relatedly, would powers scale, or work at full size even though the users aren't, or be completely inaccessible?

or items get converted to their down-sized versions? Like a Cloud uses an Exacto knife for the Buster Blade

Right now, I'm thinking that everything scales, powers and items alike - but within reason. For example, ants can lift items that are 100 times their weight or whatever. So, a character with super strength will still have it, but everyone else would have similar super strength too. A person who can fly can still do so, but they'll have to adjust their powers for the way small breezes suddenly have hurricane force behind them. Etc, etc. Ultimately, no character would have too much over-powered control over the setting or other characters because of everyone's size.

Does that make sense? Open to feedback on this too.

this is not something that would last as a game

i think it'd be better suited for in-game events rather than a full-scale game. the gimmick would only be interesting for so long. it's a cute idea, but not very practical.

anon... there's a game based around wing-trope.

i think a game that's well thought out and based on tiny people would do well enough on its own. it's less the mechanics of the game and more making sure that people who whine and bitch about every little thing get shut down or kept out and that there are events that happen throughout to keep people entertained. that's all you need.

plus heavy emphasis on "you get what's on the tin," which more people need to keep in mind with all games imho

OP said it would be lighthearted slice of life + survival. sounds like a good premise for that genre to me!

I dunno, it seems to me like it could work in the long term. The Smurfs lasted the whole 80s with "everyone's tiny" as one of its key elements, after all.

...anon, a cartoon and a rp game aren't exactly comparable. you have people who have to be active in an rp game, whereas watching a show takes no real effort on the viewer's part. there's also monetary incentive to continue animating a kid's show.

rpers are notorious for being attracted to a novel idea and then go on to something else once things become boring (after a few weeks or even a month). it reminds me of how overjoy crashed and burned, as well as a few other games.

New games are pretty hit and miss no matter what their premise is. I happen to like this idea. Lighthearted, slice-of-life survival! There's a huge space for creativity with this, imo. Imagine being that tiny and dealing with insects, rain, living in the walls of a giant's home. Electronics, stealing food, being forced to figure out how to obtain/cook the food you want when it's so much bigger. Doing all of this while trying to keep your existence a secret. It's not going to be for everyone, but it's not really any different from other jamjars with a quirky addition?

"You've been brought [to mysterious foreign land] because [reason] and now you have [new and unwelcome change to your being]. There are NPCs out to [hinder/aid] you. Have fun surviving!"

Sometimes people eat that up, and sometimes they don't. Like I said, hit or miss. OP won't know until they try! (Personally, I hope they do.)

i'd play in it, i like lighthearted games and the survival aspect sounds fun
