Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

Hey! This is the designated catch-all entry. This is not an invitation to spam to your heart's content. The same rules apply.

I'm starting grad school next year. What stuff can I wear to mixers that will signal to other nerds that I am a geek, but not demonstrate geekiness to people who aren't intense fandomers?

you're in grad school, isn't everybody there a nerd and a geek

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Should have specified that it's business school.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The...same things you wear now? WTH does starting grad school have to do with it?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to make friends with nerds at mixers. But! I don't want to walk out with a Naruto headband and be That Girl the whole time.

I would say subtle things or things with symbols rather than characters.

For example, I made a hair clip of a Zephyr Badge from Pokemon. Most people who aren't into Pokemon have no idea what the badges look like. But people who do are like "Hey, cool hair clip! Zephyr Badge?"

I like this! I was thinking jewelry and keychains of symbols would be good.

Even small things like pins or, if you can get them, wristbands work pretty well.

Go for t-shirts. Stuff I got off of teefury has gotten me more nerd contacts than anything else.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Distressed and heathered shirts only!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally misread that as "I'm starting grade school next year."

Jewelry is good. I wore a keyblade necklace for a while, and got a lot of comments from people who recognized it and people who didn't.

Pins and keychains on bags work too. Just don't like... encrust your bag with them, choose a few pretty ones and artfully arrange them on there, because otherwise you're giving off total weeb vibes.

Also t-shirts are an obvious choice, but artsier, more subtle shirts look more mature (and are generally prettier) than slapping on a logo or a character like Hot Topic does. I know threadless has a few nerdy shirts (and $10 shirt sales from time to time) and there are a bunch of nerdy-but-pretty shirt sites out there.

Jewelry or other accessories. I used to have a FFVIII watch that looks like any normal watch except the picture behind the dial. The Evenstar necklace or Nenya ring if you like LotR, the Fairy Tail symbol if you like the manga... not something overtly obvious like Naruto's sharingan symbol. There's a chance that even geeks will miss it for being too subtle though.

...can't you just act as you normally do and get to know people naturally?

some of us try the latter, and it doesn't work well :( Darn my social awkwardness.
