Wow, if you're the person talking about the good old days back when RPers had manners, I really just... don't want to know you. Because from the sounds of it, you're coming from the standpoint of all RPers are basically jackanapes, and we need rules and etiquette to hide our basic nastiness from each other.

In a situation where someone reserves the same day a character is dropped, my last assumption is that they were circling like a vulture, thinking they could do a far better job.

My first ones? That they had really wanted to play that character in that game for a while now, and wanted to make sure they'd have a shot at it. OR. They were looking through games, only checking the taken characters list, and found one they liked that, oh look, this character isn't taken! (of course, the latter only works in situations where the mods are very quick to update things as characters add and drop.)

Still, I don't assume that people are fundamentally mean, which is what your assumption is saying to me.
