that's kind of not the same thing -- characters writing in a different language than they would normally so the audience can understand them is not something that sticks out to us because it's just how we operate when we watch or read a thing that has characters that should be speaking different languages. since it's being made into our own "default" language we can easily suspend our disbelief and imagine that it's still japanese or chinese or whatever, which is different from a different dialect of the same language that everyone understands

i wasn't thinking about the "magical communicators" thing, but i still see no reason why something as easily implemented as british english spellings for british characters (who, when writing, continue to be british) should be ignored because of it. the fact that most RPers seem to be american doesn't make british spelling any more of some kind of crazy additional quirk that throws everything else out of whack if you keep it in mind for the sake of characterization.

I see no reason why it should be considered a vital part of characterization. Phonetically typing out dialects, Homestuck troll text quirks, suffixes for Japanese characters: these are all similar things which could be argued must be kept in mind 'for the sake of characterization' and have had countless arguments against them.

Carrying on as if typing in British English is the one shining exception is incorrect, and, I'd argue, is lazy RPing: just as you shouldn't need to crutch on text quirks to play a given troll, you shouldn't need to crutch on British English to convey that a character is British. If you choose to do so I have no quarrels, just as I'd have no problems if a British player writing for Captain America felt more comfortable typing with spelling that they are familiar with, but there's a difference between that and necessary for characterization.
