Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

I have a strange phobia. I have a fear of having to hear other people taking a crap and also of people hearing me take a crap. I compensate by not using public bathrooms at all. However, my apartment's bathroom shares a wall with my neighbor's bathroom. I'm so worried that they can hear me shitting that I run the sink on full blast to mask the sound. But that's such a waste of water.

What do?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-01 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
i let the water run so that nobody can hear me when i poop

(Anonymous) 2012-03-01 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Good to hear that I'm not the only one who does this. Thanks, anon! ♥

this isn't a strange phobia. loads of people have it. you're either going to have to get over it, time your bowel movements for when your neighbour's out, keep running the water or maybe play loud music in there when you go.

I know I need to get over it, but I'm glad to know this isn't so weird.

I can't always anticipate when my neighbor's out, but playing loud music sounds like a good and environmentally sound idea. I'll do that. Thanks! ♥

get earplugs. wear in public restroom.

at the apartment, turn on radio.

The music, which the anon above you also suggested, and the earplugs are great ideas. Thank you!

drop sheets of tp in the water so there won't be any splashing sounds, that should help

unless you go HNNNRRRRRRAAAAAAGHHHH when you shit in which case i guess just keep running water every time

i've been doing the toilet paper thing for years. half because it feels awkward when people can hear me pooping (though i find it kind of funny when i hear someone else poop) and half because i hate splashback. so nasty when you drop a big one and feel a little toilet water hit you right in the ass.

I get self conscious about the poo sounds and I've never thought about this toilet paper thing! Thanks anon :D

As someone else said, this isn't a strange phobia. There's actually a name for it...which I have forgotten. But I remember reading that public restrooms in Japan are often equipped with a little speaker that makes it sound like there's water running. The devises were added to stop people from running (and wasting) the water to cover the sounds they made while using the restroom.

idk if you could get one of those devices, but either way, know that you're far from alone.

Apparently this was such a common fear in japan that they installed these little like... sound players in toilets to mimic the sound of running water so people wouldn't leave the water on.

So, maybe find a sound clip of running water, and just play that really loudly each time you use the bathroom?

Move to Japan.

The anons above me are right, though. Pretty much every public restroom I used in Japan (excluding the ones with only squat toilets) either automatically played running water or had a button which would play the sound for you. You're not alone in your phobia.

You could always try to import a toilet from Japan. Those things can come with heated seats! It's probably expensive, though.

I live in Japan, and it's not really a matter of phobia as it is social etiquette--I'm not phobic and I still do it, because letting other people hear you is just...rude. Then again, a lot of things here are rude, like blowing your nose in public (they sniff instead, which drives my up the wall).

I'd recommend playing music or buying earplugs. The toiler paper trick...eh, it's a waste of paper, imho.
