how bout that sonic boom

the game description so far seems interesting and the cartoon trailer seemed cute. i like tails's design a lot, sonic's is ok and amy's cute.

but what the fuck i cant look at knuckles without bursting into laughter, holy shit, what even is that, i want to buy all his merchandise to laugh at it

this is basically how i feel tbh. tails is going to be my favourite i can tell already

I actually like Knuckles' design; his body shape makes sense given that his thing is physical strength and now he's not just "red sonic." Tails is basically the same, Sonic has blue arms for some reason and everyone has wraps. Outside of their shoes.

For some reason, Amy's design just bothers me. If her personality ends up being more than just "WHERE IS SONIC I LOVE SONIC" that will be great. But...Her design isn't BAD, I just can't really get on board with it. Then again, I really liked her Adventure-era design, so.

I liked her redesign in Adventure too. That a lot of her sports outfits (Riders, Olympic games) were really cute and surprisingly practical without losing the girly aspect of her character kinda leaves me headscratching at the choice of wardrobe for her here.

Just... what is she wearing?? What is that dress? Is it even a dress? Everything else looks fine, but I just... it looks weird man.

yeah. i mean, knuckles gets around by digging, and he digs with punching through the ground. i did like the idea of him having some weird unnatural superstrength that was disproportionate to his slight appearance, but ultimately this makes more sense. i like buff knuckles.

as for amy... idk? amy's designs are usually kinda cutesy retro and she looks weirdly like—edgy? from her outfit to her expression. like i'd say that look would better suit someone like julie sue or princess sally. totally different canons, i know, but i'm just saying. it doesn't feel like amy at all. that's why it bugs me.

The animation looks fine and I think the 3D models will help with the issue of trying to animate Sonic characters in 2D (remember how quality Sonic X was at times? Not even going to try and talk about the older cartoons)

Except for Sonic's running.

There's just something really jank about that running animation in the trailer and I don't know if it's because I'm not used to the character design yet or if I'm just conditioned to his nice running animation in Unleashed and Colours. Is it because his head doesn't look like it fits his body? ~~but truthfully his head has always been too big for his body~~ I don't even know

Kinda sad Eggman doesn't look like as much of an egg now but it's okay, I'll deal. unless they permanently change his appearance to this, then I'll be quietly buttmad in the corner over there.

yeah the running is clunky and bad. i don't know what it is exactly. it doesn't help he's dangling his arms behind him like some goddamn naruto character or something

also yeah, what the heck? eggman's fat has slowly been going upwards, and now he's just buff. is he trying to get in shape. tryna get ladies. what's goin on, man

Tbf he's always had his arms behind him like that since the Adventure days. Granted, they didn't stick out quite as much but yeah...

A friend and i were talking, and we think it might be the lack of animation for his head; it stays in a static line during his run vs moving up and down slightly in the trailer so it makes his entire run look unnatural.

And what are you talking about? Eggman's always gotten ladies before, it's the moustache dontchaknow? (Insert stock laugh track here)

I don't understand changing Sonic's arm colour when Amy is going to keep the peach arm thing.

And knuckles reminds me of storm's design.

I am super hype for the game because we can finally play as more than just Sonic. Playing as just Sonic is BORING. One of the reasons I haven't JUMPED at the idea of playing Lost World. I am so sick of playing as just Sonic.

"then don't play sonic games" come on in the super mario 3D land and whatever games you can play as more than just mario

playing as more than one character is a GOOD idea and people who think "sonic or nothing" are dumb

Unfortunately I think people were seriously turned off from the concept because of how terrible the non-hedgehog characters were in the 2006 game. One more reason to hate it, I guess.

I think they actually struck a good variety in Black Knight. The second half of the game lets you play as alternate characters, so if you wanted a different play style (and I mean different, their speeds and attacks work differently from Sonic even after you change his 'style') for four different stages, you could. If you thought that multiple characters was the cancer that was killing Sonic - which some people did think because of Heroes and 06 despite being the ones who asked for multiple characters a la Adventure series anyway - you could just play as Sonic. The cutscenes still happened with it's respective character, you still progressed through the story, you can play exclusively as Sonic or switch it up.

But seriously, there are loads of Sonic games where you can play as characters other than Sonic, what are you talking about? Unleashed, Colours and Lost World are only the most recent games where you have to play as Sonic and you kinda get the feeling that SEGA was doing that as an apology for the clusterfuck that was 06's amigo system. Gods that gameplay decision did not work.

And yeah. Haha, I know, who played Black Knight other than me weh weh Sonic with a sword shut your face Caliburn was the greatest

There are plenty of games, sure, but since 06 there hasn't really been any, unless you count Sonic Rush Adventure? And Sonic 06, as you said, was a huuuuge mistake. (And Sonic and the Black Knight, but yeah, who cares)

I just feel that the games could use more variety again, particularly with characters that do not emphasize speed as their only worthwhile thing.

I forgot to mention Generations I'm sorry, I've lost all my Sonic credibility.

Actually, the iOS games (Dash and Jump) have alternate characters you can play as! Though I admit that in Dash its more aesthetics rather than gameplay and I haven't unlocked anyone else in Jump yet to know for sure whether the game's lying to me or not.

Now that SEGA seems to have Sonic's core gameplay down, they probably feel like it's a good time to venture forth into new characters again. (also the idea of 'time heals all wounds' and maybe people will have finally calmed down enough after the 06 fiasco to give other characters a chance in the spotlight) But this is the Sonic fandom, one of the most unpleasable fanbases on the planet, so I bet people will shake and cry over weird things like Sky Sanctuary not being yellow in Generations. Or something. ~~the Knuckles beat-em-up we've always wanted...~~

We should probably brace ourselves for the complaints though.

since we're never going to get it i might as well say that i seriously loved the way sonic was animated in sonic CD's opening/ending and in the OVA and i wish they'd have animated sonic boom like this as a callback to that ah well it's prolly just my nostalgia talking anyway
