This guy actually happened completely by accident. I was playing with a D&D type setting when I realized that wizards could have panthers as familiars, and I wondered at how exactly something like that would have fallen into place. Then I started writing.

Annnd then he became an incredibly protective snarkwagon and basically what a cat would be if he could speak. And then because of the backstory, he ended up becoming a shapeshifter and spending most of his time human. He ended up with a drinking problem and a brilliant son who he utterly failed at parenting. He ended up being a bit of a rogue and really good at fading into the shadows.

Though he's a side character wherever he shows up, he just keeps showing up in some capacity. He's a character who comes out of nowhere, ends up being the mysterious support, and then eventually disappears into the night.

I think the appeal for others in playing off of him is that Augury is the support character. He's the sidekick, the wise old mentor, the anti-hero, the hero of another story that teams up with them for this one important mission. He enhances the other player's already existing story.

Have you played Augury in any games? How easy/difficult is it to find a niche for him, if so?

...and could I have a citation on the panther familiars, by any chance?

I played him in

adstringendum a few years back, and he was fairly well-loved there while he was active. He actually was the one who discovered the memetic giant squid who is now the mascot.

There is ALWAYS a place for the mentor/drinking buddy/guy willing to back you up in a fight.
