Everything is under control

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

Hey! Do not post anything outside of these threads. It will be deleted.

When you first meet Dave Strider, his name is initially entered as INSUFFERABLE PRICK, he slashes the entry box in half with a katana until his name is properly entered as DAVE STRIDER, because he is simply too cool to deal with stupid bullshit such as someone attempting to troll him and failing miserably. Because Dave is, and forever will be, the coolest kid you know.

Dave, at first glance, is rather wrapped up in this persona. He wears sunglasses, listens to music he makes himself, and he runs a pretty successful webcomic known as Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff. He reads Game Bro magazine, plays games casually, and has a pretty awesome fascination with sick swords that are super cool and never lame. He even types in a way thats totally not bothered by anything ever but is at the same time eyecatching with how bright yet nonchalant it is.

However, once you look past the coolkid persona, you see that Dave is a very clever young man who picks up things quickly and masters them ever quicker. While most of the other kids in the game don't have their Strife Specibus picked out and figured out, Dave not only has his weapons already equipped, but uses one of the most complicated and advanced Sylladices available. He instructs John, his best friend, on how to make his Sylladex more usable in order to prepare for the game itself. He is quick to adapt and quick to learn, which makes him one of the most valuable players in the game. Dave managed to, on his own terms (well, with a little help from Terezi), rig the game's stock market and become filthy rich simply because he played the system. He's smart -- and he uses it to his advantage.

Not only is Dave smart, but he's level-headed. He doesn't allow things to directly affect him, ranging from the completely and utterly bizarre (like the game sburb itself) to the horrifying (like seeing his own dead body or the body of his brother). This isn't to say that Dave is completely unruffled -- there are moments where he cries in fear and shock or is genuinely shaken (like the moment where he refuses to pull his brother's sword out of his own body because he didn't want to see more blood), but Dave always picks himself up and pulls himself back together. He is not the one to fall apart -- if anything, he is what keeps the team together. Always the first to point out a stupid decision or to tell his friends to not do something, to think it through, Dave is the strategist, second only to Rose. He pulls the strings to make sure everything comes together and in order to do that, and do it well, he has to keep his cool.

In the moments where Dave does lose his cool, though, it is almost always in connection to his friends. His friends are the reason why Dave plays sburb as well as he does -- because he has to keep them alive. When he discovers Rose's plan to kill herself in order to detonate the bomb, to begin the Scratch, Dave is noticeably upset and demands that there has to be another way. He begs John not to launch into the next reality in order to fight the denizen, because he knows that his best friend will die if he follows Vriska's advice. And he is seen, numerous times, offering Jade encouragement and advice in order to have her play the game to the best of her ability. He cares, very deeply, for his friends, and will do anything to help them -- including accompany Rose on a supposed suicide mission to begin the Scratch, which is what he was doing before he came to Adstringendum.

To summarize: Dave is loyal, brave, courageous, intelligent, and level-headed. He will do anything it takes to get the job done, within reason, and will never give up unless the last breath leaves his body. His friends and family mean everything to him and while Dave, on the outside, extends a nonchalant Devil-may-care attitude, on the inside, he is anything but.

In short, Dave Strider is simply the best there is. 8)

Is it just me or, is this personality section missing something? Dave's cool dude persona covers up fears and insecurities that the mun doesn't mention, and he has a lot of bad qualities like his misogyny and prickishness. I'd want to see more of that mentioned but here it's all about how Dave is so cool, level-headed, courageous, smart, badass, ect.

...misogyny?

I'm not 100% sure what op is referring to here, but the first thing I thought of was his attitude toward Jade, feeling like she needs to be protected from everything because she wouldn't be able to handle it on her own.

That says more about how he thinks of Jade specifically than women as a whole. He doesn't seem to think that way about Rose or Terezi at all.

Yeah, it's not necessarily indicative of wider attitudes or anything, it's pretty much just the closest thing I could think of for what the op might've meant.

Did they just not read any of the parts where he loses his cool, or the entire conversation he had with Terezi where he admits that his bro was a hero, John IS a hero, and he's not? He and Davesprite both bring up their roles as hero support several times.

I wish more Dave players would remember he's an insecure 13-year-old boy with some strong walls put up.

He begs John not to launch into the next reality in order to fight the denizen, because he knows that his best friend will die if he follows Vriska's advice

Terezi's advice

One-dimensional character interpretations aside, this is basic reading comprehension we're talking here

are we seriously posting apps to criticise here now?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-03 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like a tongue-in-cheek personality section about a character in a sometimes silly comic? I don't see a problem with it, but googling snippets of the app didn't show me the actual app, so I have no idea what the samples are like. It does mention him losing his cool about his friends, so.. I don't see what the problem is?

It's a personality section in an app for an RP. It's not supposed to deeply plunge into every single facet of his character. I don't see how this is any worse than the other million apps I've seen.
