Yo. Read the entire thread, get where you're coming from, here to tell you that you totally misunderstood troll romance.

The moirail is obliged to pacify the other, to function as the better half.

The two partners in a strong pale relationship will serve to balance and complement each other's emotional profiles, and thus allow their other relationships to be more successful.

Karkat<>Kanaya does not fit the emotional profile of a good moirallegiance at all because hey get this:

Neither of them are irrationally dangerous.

Some are more hot-tempered and dangerous than others, to the extent that if left to their own devices, they would present a serious threat to society, or even to themselves.

Such trolls will have an instinctive pale attraction to a more even-tempered troll, who may become their MOIRAIL.

A reasonable human translation would be the concept of a soul mate, but in a more platonic sense, and with a more specific social purpose.

A moirail isn't a platonic soul bro that you talk out your shit to. A moirail is the person who will slap you and call you a grumpy motherglubber if your shit is twisted. They have a SPECIFIC SOCIAL PURPOSE which oh my god why do people gloss over that?

A moirail's job is not to sort out your emotional problems.

It is to stop you from going axe-happy on society.

It is to stop you from being a danger to yourself.

If you do not understand the basics of troll romance and cannot wrap your head around decisions that Karkat himself makes and that has been hinted to throughout the entirety of Act 5.2 (every mention of being responsible for gamzee?):

You are the one who doesn't understand his character.

To be entirely fair, Karkat acts like he's responsible for everyone, not just Gamzee. Which, if he's being the leader of everyone, then technically he is responsible for all of them.

I mean, he even interacts with Eridan in a very pale manner prior to Eridan going all murderhappy.

I do agree that Karkat<>Kanaya is a bit of a stretch as neither are particularly dangerous, but I do still feel a bit that Karkat<>Gamzee did come out of some place not quite nowhere, but in the general vicinity thereof? I can appreciate why people might disagree with it, at any rate. Especially since Karkat does seem strangely way too happy and calm during the entire shooshpap sequence, which, while I definitely get that being his usual ornery self might have gotten them all killed... he still seems just way too happy even when Gamzee isn't looking.

(Also, with what we know right now, the relationship just seems very one-sided. I can't imagine that not getting killed is the only benefit to the more conciliatory natured troll in the relationship. I would think if that were the only benefit, then they'd probably just let the violent one get themself killed or kill them for the good of the species or something. I hope Hussie elucidates more on their relationship in the future.)

The relationship is also very new in its current form. We've still only caught a glimpse at how Gamzee acts when pacified and sober, so expecting a clear picture of how he upholds his end of the moirallegiance isn't going to net much right now.

All we can really say so far is he held Karkat while he cried about Sollux's apparent death, at least.

He tried to calm Karkat down when he flipped out when the kids arrived, too. It's hard to tell how much it really worked, but he definitely seemed to care more than any of the others, at least.

whoa hey you misunderstood what i said a little! "Karkat acts like he's responsible for everyone"? i never disagreed with this or said otherwise. he is responsible for everyone to some degree and has acted somewhat pale towards other trolls, but.

it wasn't out of nowhere if you were paying attention!

don't forget kanaya: return to the core or his conversations with jade, either. he acts like he's responsible for everyone, yes, but he has specifically singled out gamzee on more than one occasion the way he hasn't really for anybody else.

Yeah, this. I ship Karkat<>Kanaya but I never felt like Karkat<>Gamzee "came out of nowhere." In fact I thought a lot time ago that K<>G was going to be canon and it really surprised me that people were surprised by it.
