Everything is under control

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

I've only played the Japanese versions of the games. I don't think badly the English versions or anything, I've never played them. The Japanese versions seemed like good language practice and I didn't expect to be that into it.

If I apply to a game as a Japanese variant, what are the odds of the mods knowing the Japanese version well enough to judge it, and how annoying would that be to any existing cast to get an Itonoko or a Mayoi instead of a Gumshoe or a Maya?

It will probably be seen as some elitist anti-dub move, too.

I don't understand what is in the Japanese version that is so vastly different from the English version that mods would need to know something extra in order to judge it. Besides names and locations, is there much of a difference between the versions? Genuinely asking.

Also, don't most mods deal with apps from canons they aren't familiar with? If you write the app well enough for anyone to understand, I don't see that being an issue.

That said, it could be considered a little bit of an AU if you're apping into a place that has a cast already. If only because everyone is called something different and suddenly it's Japan instead of L.A., etc. If you have castmates who wouldn't mind playing with the location and name confusion, I guess it wouldn't be a problem. But just apping in somewhere like that might get you some side eyes, yeah. It's really something you might want to consider asking potential castmates about first.

A lot of applications are concerned about character voice, not just the history and writing ability. I'm not too familiar with the English version for comparison but I do know some characters had tics made up (the director in case 1-3 doesn't use l33t speak, the client in 2-4 doesn't have a speech style that could be equated to surfer dude, etc.), some had tics dropped (the old lady Mitsurugi/Edgeworth fan tends to drag out the end of her sentences in a whiny fashion), etc.

It sounds like I'd honestly just be a pain to any cast mates though, and if I found a game without cast members already, I'd be the odd one out still if anybody apped in the future. If I'm roleplaying in English, the English version is going to be the standard for better, worse or nil.

Ah well, it's good to ask on anon meme where people can just anonymously but honestly say "it'd be better not to try."

Speaking as someone who knows absolutely nothing about the Japanese version, unless I was in a game that highly and regularly accepted AU characters, I think I would be incredibly put-off. This is in large part because I don't know what to expect from such a character and even though the stories go the same direction, as far as I know the characterization isn't entirely the same and the jokes are completely different (unless I'm mistaken, the majority of the jokes were americanized for the different audience).

Then again, I play in a game that does not accept AU character of any kinds. If I did, I might be a little more for it as long as I got a little warning what was going on first and what to expect. You might have better luck apping into a pre-established cast and checking with the cast mates first.

Also, I could be wrong but I do believe some players play "both". That is, they have enough knowledge and experience of both the english and japanese versions, yet still play using the English names (english location, etc). Honestly, that alone isn't too far of a stretch.
