STAR TREK

so how much of the fandom is reboot fans vs. fans of TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY?

Re: STAR TREK

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'd bet good money that 95% of the DWRP Star Trek fandom is reboot only. Which is sad, cause I've recently gotten back into TNG and would love to thread with someone.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, back on LJ we had a nice mix of TOS and Reboot.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
who would you like to play, anon?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Either Q or Riker. c: I'm not entirely sure which, tho.

Do you count as both even if only play from the Reboot if you're a fan of both? I'm not the biggest fan of DS9, but grew up watching TNG/DS9/VOY and TOS when it'd be on.

Re: STAR TREK

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've started watching TNG again and have been contemplating picking up a character. While I'm still uncertain who I'd play, can TNG be considered a stand alone series or would I need TOS knowledge to play from it? I know Star Trek is an extremely expansive universe but I'm only a passerby who's slightly familiar with TOS and has only really seen the reboot.

Re: STAR TREK

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you need major TOS knowledge. Just be familiar with the characters, and maybe some of the major episodes? Stuff from TOS occasionally pops up in TNG, but it's not super often.

Re: STAR TREK

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on when in the TNG crews story you want to play them from! Just the series? Then major TOS episodes and the TOS movies! The movies? You'll need to be familiar with all of the later century Trek (TNG, VOY, DS9).

TOS episodes I'd recommend though would be;

Balance of Terror
The Menagerie (and the original pilot)
Mirror, Mirror
City on the Edge of Forever
Journey to Babel
Space Seed
Trouble with Tribbles
Amok Time

TOS Movies I'd recommend I'd recommend are 2,3,4 and 6. There's probably more episodes but I can't think of any right now as it's like 4am but those are the stand outs.

Like the others are saying, passing knowledge that TOS characters existed and did vaguely Important Things should work, backed up maybe with a Memory Alpha search every now and then if something specific comes up. The TNG crew is explicitly not familiar with every single incident the TOS crew got into; when the crew comes down with the exact same psychotic space disease as the previous series, they didn't automatically recognize it and had to look the thing up.

I play this creeper and Dukat on the occasional meme, and I had an Amanda Grayson account back on LJ that I just...never migrated over.

So if you ever need a shifty tailor/spy, a genocidal jerkoff, or Spock's Mom, feel free to hit me up.

None?

I personally like both for their own reasons.

i meant in terms of people writing meta/fic and playing from, really, not from "who's in for what".

Re: STAR TREK

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I think the Reboot currently has the most fanworks/RPers because

1) It's more recent and fresh in people's minds and

2) One movie is easier to canon review than 726ish episodes (544 hours of viewing at an estimated 45 minutes per episode), 11 movies, and that's not counting any expanded universe novelizations and comic book spin offs.

I've only personally met one person who is into Abrams' Star Trek who wasn't familiar with the TV show other than "It exists", and aside from my mom all the fans I know of the Marvel movies are also fans of the comics ranging from "I own a compilation or two" to "Let me show you my room for all of my back issues they are alphabetized and sorted by publication date with cross-reference for chronological order." But for those very reasons, most of them still play from the Movieverse rather than the comic verse - canon reviewing ... 10 movies? Is easier than 30+ years worth of back-issues.

Also you don't have to deal with quite as much Problematic Material as you get from canons that are 'old enough'.

I love Enterprise and know why people hate it and I have issues with some of it but man. /waves tiny Enterprise flag

See I think the biggest problem people make is they think they need to review ALL OF IT when really, all they'd need are the BIG TOS episodes, those movies and tbh, TNG to some extent, but even a lot of that info is referenced in the appropriate series.

Is it nice to have that extra canon backing? Yes. Is it needed? No. In fact if you just reviewed certain TNG/DS9/VOY episodes you'd be covered for post-VOY TNG era movies if you wanted to play from them otherwise just rewatching the appropriate series is totally fine. It's just that people don't know where to start.

And also books and comics are actually not canon with the exception of a few, I've been in this fandom too long to know that. Star Trek's EU has had no over view for the years it's been around so yeah.
