rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Re: STAR TREK
(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 03:30 am (UTC)(link)1) It's more recent and fresh in people's minds and
2) One movie is easier to canon review than 726ish episodes (544 hours of viewing at an estimated 45 minutes per episode), 11 movies, and that's not counting any expanded universe novelizations and comic book spin offs.
I've only personally met one person who is into Abrams' Star Trek who wasn't familiar with the TV show other than "It exists", and aside from my mom all the fans I know of the Marvel movies are also fans of the comics ranging from "I own a compilation or two" to "Let me show you my room for all of my back issues they are alphabetized and sorted by publication date with cross-reference for chronological order." But for those very reasons, most of them still play from the Movieverse rather than the comic verse - canon reviewing ... 10 movies? Is easier than 30+ years worth of back-issues.
Also you don't have to deal with quite as much Problematic Material as you get from canons that are 'old enough'.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 03:55 am (UTC)(link)re: playing -- i (want to) play from ds9 and i'm certainly not going to canon review all of star trek i can find and i think people should be allowed to just stick within one series as their character's "canon"? if that makes sense?
mostly i'm bitter about people mostly playing from the reboot because i'm a huge fan of ds9 and it saddens me that it doesn't get nearly enough attention :( it was my first major fandom and i'm fond of it for all sorts of really sentimental silly reasons (the immigrant/expat narratives! aaa!) and my dream is a huge active and fun ds9 cast at some game SOMEWHERE

Re: STAR TREK
(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)I love Enterprise and know why people hate it and I have issues with some of it but man. /waves tiny Enterprise flagSee I think the biggest problem people make is they think they need to review ALL OF IT when really, all they'd need are the BIG TOS episodes, those movies and tbh, TNG to some extent, but even a lot of that info is referenced in the appropriate series.
Is it nice to have that extra canon backing? Yes. Is it needed? No. In fact if you just reviewed certain TNG/DS9/VOY episodes you'd be covered for post-VOY TNG era movies if you wanted to play from them otherwise just rewatching the appropriate series is totally fine. It's just that people don't know where to start.
And also books and comics are actually not canon with the exception of a few, I've been in this fandom too long to know that. Star Trek's EU has had no over view for the years it's been around so yeah.
