I've started watching TNG again and have been contemplating picking up a character. While I'm still uncertain who I'd play, can TNG be considered a stand alone series or would I need TOS knowledge to play from it? I know Star Trek is an extremely expansive universe but I'm only a passerby who's slightly familiar with TOS and has only really seen the reboot.

I don't think you need major TOS knowledge. Just be familiar with the characters, and maybe some of the major episodes? Stuff from TOS occasionally pops up in TNG, but it's not super often.

It depends on when in the TNG crews story you want to play them from! Just the series? Then major TOS episodes and the TOS movies! The movies? You'll need to be familiar with all of the later century Trek (TNG, VOY, DS9).

TOS episodes I'd recommend though would be;

Balance of Terror
The Menagerie (and the original pilot)
Mirror, Mirror
City on the Edge of Forever
Journey to Babel
Space Seed
Trouble with Tribbles
Amok Time

TOS Movies I'd recommend I'd recommend are 2,3,4 and 6. There's probably more episodes but I can't think of any right now as it's like 4am but those are the stand outs.

i like your taste in tos episodes, anon. this is more or less the exact list i gave a friend of mine when asking for recommendations for tos episodes, + the squire of gothos.

Thanks anon! (and the one that added on the eps too). Netflix has some of TOS, but I don't think it's the entire series at all - I'd need to double check that, but if it has the episodes you've listed or the movies at least, I'm definitely gonna check them out whenever possible c:

Netflix has the entire run of TOS! It was the shortest of the Star Trek series, and it has all of these! It doesn't have the movies (it was Wrath of Khan (2) but not the others I THINK) but you can find those online elsewhere to stream!

I'm always happy to help though!

I'm leaning towards La Forge & Riker for now, but seeing as I'm only midway through season 1, it's entirely subject to change!

Like the others are saying, passing knowledge that TOS characters existed and did vaguely Important Things should work, backed up maybe with a Memory Alpha search every now and then if something specific comes up. The TNG crew is explicitly not familiar with every single incident the TOS crew got into; when the crew comes down with the exact same psychotic space disease as the previous series, they didn't automatically recognize it and had to look the thing up.
