i haven't played L but i've played a smartypants detective character! it's hard but it's a lot of fun.

first of all, try to include his process in the narrative, if you can. like "he noticed her collar was astray, and suddenly realized..." or "his eyes strayed to the left bookcase" or just...something so that it doesn't feel like it's coming out of nowhere. it's hard to do with characters who are canonically so super-smart that you're not really supposed to follow their deduction process, but at least make it evident he's going off of something. that makes it come off as much less info-modding.

additionally, it's a really good idea to make a separate post in your journal (or a textfile or something) and use it for notes on other characters. you don't have to make it public but you might want to put urls to posts and threads next to things he's learned, so that if someone accuses you of info-modding (and there's always going to be SOMEONE who gets super put-out that they can't control what other characters notice and think about them) then you can link back to it.

finally, don't be afraid to ask someone if it's okay if he figures out their character's secret or whatever. most people are totally open to that, and even if they aren't, then sometimes it can be fun to figure out why the super-genius hasn't realized it yet.

When I played L once upon a time, I kept notes on everything he knew about the people he was interested in, with links to the threads/posts in which he observed or learned about those things.

Also remember, however, that L only takes interest in certain mysteries. Many everyday crimes are simply beneath him, and he wouldn't be keen to investigate an ordinary assault or the kind of villainous activities that often go on in RP settings, which gives you an excuse to outright ignore many of the bad guys in a game and avoid stepping on toes.
