Where's it falling short?

This may not be what the other anon was talking about, but for me the biggest failing of this opener was the villain. I mean, let's face it. Sombra had pretty much no development as a character and came off as the weakest villain we've had so far (personality-wise, not power-wise). And after antagonists like Discord, Nightmare Moon, and Chrysalis, that's a pretty pitiful showing.

Still, the Mane Six were enjoyable as always and I was glad to see Cadence and Shining Armor again, plus the worldbuilding about the Crystal Empire was pretty interesting. It was hardly bad, quite good, actually, and it set up a lot of plot points I'm hoping to see explored in the coming episodes, but I think it was probably the least impressive season opening we've had so far.

I get the feeling that the writers were trying to go for a villain that felt more like a force of nature than an actual character-my friends who were watching with me kept drawing parallels to Sauron, and I feel like that's a pretty apt comparison. I don't think it worked out particularly well, though. If he'd been the first villain that the heroes took out it wouldn't have been too bad, but again, he's coming off on the heels of some really good antagonists.

I think everyone liked it just fine, but Discord just made things more interesting and gave the characters some fun stuff to do. Sombra was just another villain who does stuff (although I liked the fear door part).

i liked the fear door till twilight solved it with a zap. seriously, every time something came up, she had a zap for it, almost instantly. Until the very last thing of course, which was just too convenient. I really would like to see her put more effort into figuring out things with her magic, just not just one shotting everything or being completely powerless with nothing in between.

Her copying celestia's little darkness beam trick was one thing, because at least she'd seen it once, and doing something quite similar to what she needed to do there, but the sudden, oh i can fix the fear door with this *zap* was just...bleh.

Shes like the apple store. Got a problem? Theres a zap for that.
