[D] How you like me now?

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Concerns?

Hey! Do not post anything outside of these threads. It will be deleted.
Go be cute and fun and fun and funny over here.

How do you plan on dealing with the fact that often war type games do fail?

Not quite sure why, but likely is the fact that it separates the playerbase and limits CR. When a game is small that can be a huge problem. Just tend to see those sorts of games fail quite often and with memory loss not being so popular you're already at a disadvantage.

The ones that have seemed to have worked best is to have the factions be optional to join or its not known which one characters joined right off. Another idea could be to only allow for joining one faction to start off with and once the game increases beyond a certain size people have the option of joining the other or even betraying the current one open up.

Good points here.

You're welcome! I like that type of game, so it is a shame to me to see them fail. Better to know right away what to try and work around to make for a successful game.

I'd actually suggest to look at Wonderland Wars back on LJ for some ideas. That was a reasonably successful war type game that closed more because of the mods than lack of interest in the setting. That may give some ideas to make this work. Also look at Edensphere for an example of a successful memory loss game.

I like the idea of there only being one faction to begin with so you don't divide CR from the get go.

Maybe not give characters a lot of information about the initial faction. As the game continues, more information comes to light and the other faction can become available which might make one more appealing? I don't know what sort of game OP is imagining right away but maybe this can all get started by an NPC conspiracy group that defaults to the other side or there's a sociopolitical pull?

I played in a successful game with multiple factions.

I think a very important thing to do is to not completely cut off interaction between factions and not limit it to hostilities only either. Make it so that characters in different factions can interact, whether it's fine to meet the guys from the other side in a neutral zone or if they have to do it in secret. Give the characters in different factions motivations to meet and team up. Maybe they want to work together to piece together the whole story of what's going on or maybe a group of people want to sabotage everyone. Or maybe sometimes the factions are forced to team up. If you've got multiple factions, you have the potential for alliances and backstabbing as well.

these are all good points! ones i had not thought on

initially i wasn't planning on limiting communication between forces - characters would be free to talk cross-faction, and switch factions if they liked, in order to regain the most memories, though too much of it would get them side-eyed by the faction leaders

but gauging from this and the responses to this, starting out with only one faction that has deep-seated tensions and eventually splits into two seems like it might be a better idea, at least at the beginning.

i will definitely take all of this into consideration!
