Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. It doesn't look like DW can handle 5,000 comment entries at the moment so please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

My pet peeve? When someone makes a great post, replies once or twice, then just vanishes.

Why are you trying to make this wank happen?

No, I've never heard of them until right now.

I'll admit, this is probably a selfish complaint:

When someone makes an entry, gets many tags, and only replies to some of them, ignoring others.

Don't get me wrong, I understand their side, too. Sure, maybe some of the tags they get aren't interesting enough and this is a DR, so they're doing nothing wrong, yadda yadda.

But in my perspective, if I did something like this, I feel like I'm treating my taggers as accessories, deciding which one looks interesting and which one doesn't. I'd at least give everyone a chance, about a few tags, before deciding if the thread will go somewhere or not. I can't imagine how disappointed they would be to find out their tag is being ignored...

Of course, there's the exception of getting a tag from a mun that really bothers you, or an empty oneliner, so I guess my pet peeve really is kind of selfish/hypocritical.

I'll admit I used to be really guilty of this, completely ignoring some responses. If it was because the tags didn't fit my prefs (the occasional case of someone not reading the pairing tags and in one instance someone tagged me with a furry) I usually give them a reply thanking them for the interest and then screen it.

If it's because the tag is just too poorly written to read or impossible to reply to well, or completely misses the post's purpose, I ignored it. Now I at least try a few back and forth, but if you give me literally a one word tag? Or a tag where your character literally does nothing? Nope. Moving on to better threads, thanks, but I leave them as they are.

Like I said, this is mostly just me being all weh weh but

Yeah, if the tag is a poorly written one-liner that you have a hard time thinking of a reply to, I can see that.

But I have seen some nice tags that were ignored. Tags that had decent writing, were a few paragraphs long, fit the entry's preferences, etc. It made me wonder just what exactly were in those tags that made them so 'uninteresting' that the OP f the entry ignored them? It's those kind of tags I'm talking about in my original pet peeve.

I'm guilty of doing this (though to be honest I don't really feel "guilty" per se) so I'll give my perspective on it.

It's all subjective. What might be nicely written and interesting to you might be just kind of mediocre to me. I might have seen the other player's threads elsewhere and, for whatever reason, not gotten a favorable impression of how they write and develop a thread, or their particular tag may in subtle ways not really be what I'm looking for. I may hold certain characters or character types to higher standards than others, or just plain dislike certain characters/character types. I probably sound pretty elitist here, but I do try to give everyone a chance, unless their tag is just straight-up boring. However, there are always going to be characters and players I connect with instantly, and others that I just don't connect with at all. In a dressing room I feel I have more freedom to make those snap judgements. I'm playing for smut, after all, so it's a safe bet to say that I'm playing for instant gratification. I don't really want to do tag after tag in hopes that something might develop if I don't feel that there's a spark there to begin with. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what the spark is, but I know it when I see it, and I know it when I don't. That doesn't mean the other character or player is bad, just that I'm not really connecting with them.

I agree that some people should be more open to giving other players a chance. Threads aren't always going to be sparkles and rainbows immediately.

However, if your tag is similar in concept/structure to several tags that came before it on my post, you can bet your ass I'll ignore it. I do not want to play out approximately the same thread with multiple people. Either bring something original, or don't bother.

This is probably true in any game but...

ONE WORD REPLIES.

Aaaaauuuuugh. Are you really SO lazy that you can't even give me one LINE?

Re: TLH pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
jfc, really?? I've yet to see one word replies in TLH. I never knew they existed...

Not in TLH at least.

DA

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
lol I think they're rare but they do exist on TLH

I have literally gotten a reply that was just this:

"Yes."

And nothing else. I had just given them a tag that was about two paragraphs long too. I was so insulted I just stopped replying to them.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
woah two paragraphs? It's one thing if they replied "yes" to a one-liner tag, but a reply like that to two paragraphs?

wow.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I also got a reply like that. Sure, my reply was only a couple of lines because their tags had been getting steadily shorter and I was matching pace and all I got was "No."

Not even '"No," she said.'

What.

I want to play out my kinky stuff, but whenever I make a post that actually hits my buttons no one tags it (or I only get obviously pity tags from a friend or two).

I'm not up for outing myself on rpanons by putting up a "would anyone want to play this?" comment for my kinks so people are looking out for the post. I have one friend who will thread almost anything with me but one of my kinks is one of her squicks, so I never have had the chance to incorporate it. Unless there's another idea for getting more interest in an individual post I'm not thinking of, I'm basically SOL with the current player base as far as I can tell.

I'm curious: what kink is it that squicks out your friend?

When people think playing a quiet/shy/anti-social character means they have an excuse to give shitty replies. It's like, okay your character doesn't talk much. That's fine and dandy, but you still need to give me something to work with. Dialog isn't everything, you know.

Re: TLH pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
oh totally this. I've played several very shy/quiet characters before and there's so much you can do with them besides what's actually spoken. If your character is shy you need to put more of their inner thoughts into tags as well as facial expressions and body language. I mean all of that is important to playing any character, but I think especially so for the quiet ones.
