[M] Here's an idea

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Concerns?

Hey! This is the designated catch-all entry. This is not an invitation to spam to your heart's content. The same rules apply.

would you rather rp with someone with an average writing style, but spot on characterization or someone who delivers amazing tags, yet doesn't have much of a grip on a character's personality?

It depends if I know the canon — if I do, and assuming 'average' means 'reasonable', then the former, no question. If I don't know the canon, then I'd be happy with the second.

If I know the canon and the voice is off, no amount of prettying up the writing is going to help that. I won't enjoy tagging with them, because I'll always be noticing how they don't sound like the character.

If I don't know the canon and the writing is engaging, even if someone else tells me the character is off, I don't know how so it doesn't stop me from enjoying tagging with them.

I don't get how tags could qualify as amazing if they don't manage to capture the character's personality, tbh.

the writing could be challenging and engaging enough for people to overlook any characterization flaws they see in a character they know something about, for example.

characterization > everything

Characterization and amazing tags pretty much go hand in hand.

But I'd probably go with the amazing tags. Chances are I wouldn't know the canon anyway and I'm tired of players who are great at mimicking their characters' canon mannerisms but can't understand that [...] doesn't fly in RP or are too incompetent to actually pull their character off even though they can tell you exactly what happened in which chapter.

The first one, definitely.

What about dialogue? The ability to write good dialogue is an important writing skill, but it's also an important part of capturing a character's voice
