Gilgamesh | FSN

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Likely his Fate/Zero incarnation, but any general advice would be appreciated! In particular, I'm wondering how much supplemental research (as in, the original real world legend) would be necessary. I hear he gets some back story in Fate/Extra too but I don't know how much I should be reviewing that, either, and how relevant it is in actual play.

Honestly I found Gil to be pretty divorced from his source material. Know the names of things, but that's about all you really need.

I'd say, of all the Zero servants, Gil is probably the least tied to his real world mythos. Especially compared to, say, Saber and Berserker who are both tied to a fairly lengthy amount of background material regarding the Knights of the Round Table and other Arthurian matters.

As far as Extra goes, Extra!Gil is a bit different then F/SN and Zero Gil, as is the version of Gil we see in Fate/Strange Fake, so its best to stick with the stuff presented in Zero and Stay Night. Unless, of course you really want to go into his the details about his friendship with Enkidu, which is the most important bit of information to come out of recent side material concerning Gil.

gil's backstory is in fate/extra ccc, which hasn't been localized but tumblr user ko-gil did a translation for one important scene here: http://pastebin.com/cMSheD4R

i'd also recommend checking out the first and last chapters of fate/strange fake and his parts in the f/z novels if you haven't! other than that, though, i don't think you'll have to do much reading. you should know the general story of his myth and the names of things like anon above me said, but don't worry about the details too much since the series almost never follows the myths exactly

as for general advice, just keep in mind that while he's strong, yes, he's not infallible; his arrogance is his fatal flaw and can and often does lead to the tables getting turned on him. he tends to underestimate his opponents (especially if they're women and/or minors) as seen in his fight with lancelot and with his various demises in f/sn. good luck, anon!

Fang & Vanille | FFXIII

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm planning on playing either Fang or Vanille at some point, and I'm wondering if there's any need-to-know info on them in XIII-2 or LR. I only have the original game, and I'll be playing them at a canon point from it, but if there's any major plot bombshells for either of'em in the sequels that would retroactively affect them coming from XIII I'd like to know about it.

Re: Fang & Vanille | FFXIII

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
it's been a while since I've played anything other than 13, but I'm fairly sure there's nothing in 13-2/LR that you'll need to know. I would recommend checking out the novels if you haven't already, though! they take place before 13 and flesh some things out.

the following is obvs all very subjective and may be blurred by bad memory, ymmv.

- re: timepoint, it honestly depends on what you wanna play. earlier's way more invested in reinforcing his mask, later's got more angst and wrestling over the potential weight of his emotional attachments. also, three years later, we still don't fucking know what's going on with his hammer in the latest chapters, so there's that too

- if you start worrying about whether you're playing him too heartlessly, you're probably not being heartless enough

- just because hoshino externalized the bookman/'lavi' conflict doesn't mean they're two actual sides to his personality, or even that they behave very differently. the bookman side is not 'evil' and the lavi side is not 'good'. remember that bookmen record history for humanity

- do get him invested in whatever setting he falls into, but not so much that people would take him for a native. i'm thinking of the old cfud lavi, who at one point had him spouting internet memes, arguing that he'd adjusted and picked mannerisms because he'd been in a modern setting for so long. personally, i disagree, which is why this point's here. i think he'd familiarize himself with his situation, but he wouldn't get invested enough to blend in like that. lavi picks things up about his surroundings, but his focus is ultimately on people and what they do. traditions shape history, but deeds make it

- have some fun building up his previous aliases. the boy's got a big blank excuse of a history and you know he traveled and picked up odd skills while pretending to be people he wasn't. you don't need to bring it up in all your threads, but why not take advantage of a fun opportunity for headcanon if you have it

- whatever the timepoint, don't overdo the accent for your voice. just don't

Sosuke Aizen

(Anonymous) 2014-10-27 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
I am looking into apping Aizen at Lieutenant-era, as he seems to be somewhat less Just As Planned at this age. I intend to do a canon review of the arc in question.

I am looking for ways to play him as less infallible while still being IC, and possibly interact with others that isn't overwhelming constant arrogance, for maximum RP opportunities. The way he pretends to be a nice guy does work short term, but are there other options that still align well with the character?
