Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

GENERAL | CHARACTERS WHO SMOKE

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm planning to take up an OC that is a shoutout/affectionate parody of the stereotypical hardboiled, chainsmoking (a pack or two a day or so) detective who retired but called back onto the job only he can do~

Is a pack or two a day or so enough? Too much, too little? What are the things you guys can tell me in general about quirks or habits of a smoker? What shouldn't be done and what should be done in terms of them? Anything important to figure out? Thanks in advance!

Don't know much myself, but here's a thread about smoking that I saved for future reference: http://anticirclejerk.dreamwidth.org/2469.html?thread=5550757#cmt5550757

is casual chainsmoker a thing? hopefully, since i smoke at least two to three packs a day every now and then. back in high school i used to smoke at least four in one day, and it all centered around stress/work/etc. but one or two packs should be good enough for you character!

as for quirks and habits: i always 'pack' my pack of cigs. lul. you smack the top of the pack on a table or in your palm. this is to keep the cherry of the cig from falling out and makes the tobacco tighter so it lasts longer! generally you want to do this with a new pack, but it's just a habit of mine to do it every time.

as for holding a cig, well, there are all sorts of ways: http://i.imgur.com/5l64j.jpg

i hold mine in the stealth position i guess, if you want to call it that, so it's easy for me to tap my cig. once it's small enough i just hold it like i would a joint before flicking it away. most of the time i put out my cig with the bottom of my shoe before tossing/flicking it, but a det would probably find an ashtray or drop it and grind it with the heel of their shoe.

for time and place, i like to step aside someplace where people don't have to deal with my second-hand smoke. alleyway, back door, away from others so i can think and smoke in peace. that sort of thing. also your character will stink. their breath will stink. and their teeth might be yellow. for that, i always carry men's axe spray and a few pieces of gum with me. also i've found out that guy's cologne or body spray is a lot stronger than my usual perfume when it comes to airing out cig stank fast.

dos and don'ts.. i personally think there aren't any of those? unless your character happens to share cigs with people. then getting your spit all over the thing is the worst you could do. which is something a det.. wouldn't do in the first place? anyway, it's okay for your character to just whip out a cig and have a smoke if he feels like it and is comfortable with doing so. i'm sure he wouldn't exhale his drag all over someone's face or anything.

that's all i have off the top of my head atm if you need anything else answered then i'll happily answer! thanks for putting up with my word vomit :>

Wow! Thanks for all this information. I never considered the different types people will hold a cigarette before now that I look back at my notes. The picture is a really good thing to have since I'll be making the icons of his.

I do have a few questions but I'll only ask a few of them here since I don't want to flood you with this stuff. XD Besides gum, what else have you used/taken to get rid of the cigarette breath or have been recommended to take? I'm looking up them now in Google and the results have been kind of weird to say the least. Also what are the effects of not taking a cigarette for some time? I know of the headaches and snappish nature that comes but are there any other side effects I should note?

Thanks for answering me and giving all this neat information! This will be really handy.

Da who also smokes

As far as getting cig stink out of your mouth, nothing works better than gum. I've tried mouth spray, oranges, onion and garlic sandwiches. Gum works, and my personal favorite is cinnamon. Spearmint seems to smell the strongest, tho. Not smoking makes me feel pissy and sort of shaky? Honestly I like having something to do while I'm idle more than anything else.

it's no problem at all! weird enough, i'm glad to help in anyway. hahaha :3

i definitely agree with the above anon when it comes to gum! spearmint, dentyne ice, big red chew, etc. any 'strong' flavored gum you want to keep on hand for your breath. also sometimes when i'm smoking at home, orange juice helps with killing the cig breath for me since i just chug a couple gulps and i'm good. every now and then beer is nice with a few cigs!

as for not smoking after a bit, i always get irritated or angry HAHA for a week or so then i'm fine. it's almost like quitting, but you're just telling yourself to stop smoking for a few days before your next, new pack. the first three days of not smoking have always been the toughest for me? i have friends that give up after just two hours of not smoking because they have the nastiest headaches and withdrawal shaking. fortunately, i have my work to worry and stress about, so i have something to take my mind off the urge to smoke when i'm absorbed into working 12 hours at my job. your character could be engrossed into their case and so forth if you want them to stop smoking for a bit!

just keep in mind that if you've been smoking for a long time, when you decide to quit it for a couple of days, the withdrawal symptoms happen almost immediately. your body and brain need nicotine--there's a reason why it's so hard to stop smoking. side effects are your heart rate and blood pressure are always a bit higher than normal when you constantly smoke, then it's suddenly lowered back to 'normal' levels 20 mins after your last cig iirc. the nicotine in one drag is absorbed in the lungs and goes into your bloodstream/brain in a few seconds. like, it feels great? but if you've been smoking long term, you will definitely have some coughing and wheezing every now and then. that is, until you've totally kicked the habit.
