Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

GENERAL: Special Snowflakes

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So I want to design an OC who is a special snowflake. The thing is I want them to be obnoxious, I want other characters to be annoyed by them and everything they do, I want them to be a tryhard, and I want their snowflakeyness to be a character trait, rather than being somebody as a player who wants a spotlight all the time doesn't know how to write a proper character.

General advice? How do I make it so that they're an annoying character without being a nuisance to other players? What can I do to make it clear that if you hate them a little (or a lot), I'm doing my job right?

Any and all tips and thoughts would be appreciated!

That is a PERFECT example of a special snowflake character who is also a real person, but who's special snowflakeness is irritating, but it's obvious it's supposed to be, etc.

Vriska Serket is another good example, especially if you want to take away only the bluh bluh huge bitch parts for your purposes.

I recommend you make their personality section very clear that you do view their personality this way, and probably introduce them in the OOC comm as "HI ALL, this is Yukiflake-chan, the most annoying little bitch this side of the geographical landmark."

Trixie from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a good example of a special snowflake who is a tryhard. She IS somewhat capable and it's obvious that her bragging isn't all just talk, but she still does make ridiculous claims that she can't, in the end, back up.

She also refers to herself in the third person and calls herself The Great and Powerful Trixie.

If you want to make your character come across as a special snowflake tryhard, make sure they're competent enough to be annoying, but not as competent as the character thinks of himself/herself as being. Make sure the character goes out of their way to brag, show off, and generally be a twit.

But also, as was suggested, make sure to make it clear in your OOC intro and in the character's personality section so people know this is deliberate.

Have the character grow and learn lessons slowly, so there's some progress, but they don't instantaneously become more tolerable, yet don't annoy people OOCly by never changing the slightest from their experiences.

Don't go out of your way to make the character annoying. I feel like sometimes there's the urge to overcompensate with over-the-top characters so that they're not ~perfect~ little snowflakes and whatnot, but then it just becomes... really fucking irritating dealing with their characters' shittiness. Make them obnoxious, sure, but keep their obnoxious behavior within the bounds of the personality you create for them. There is such a thing as players getting oocly annoyed with interactions with a character and then not wanting to play with them icly.

It can also help to poke fun at your character in ooc commentary when they're being particularly silly/irritating/a total tryhard. I used to do this all the time when playing my super srs evil villain, and it was one I made it clear that while my villain was srs business and did srs things, I was open to all sorts of interactions beyond that.
