[D] Not safe for work

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Still looking for advice, though as for a pull point, I'm thinking after the raid on the Sato mansion goes badly.

Thane Krios | Mass Effect

No canon point in mind yet.

Re: Thane Krios | Mass Effect

Take care to mention body language and tone of voice. In the games, a lot of Thane's emotive range and general mannerisms are conveyed in the way he holds himself, in subtle shifts of posture or expression or tone. He isn't nearly as obviously emotive as the rest of the cast, which leads a lot of players to present him as fairly flat (or to go over the top in conveying emotion in an attempt to compensate for that trap).

He also has a fairly distinctive speech pattern. Re-watching scenes he's in on YouTube, or going over a transcript, might be a good idea to help nail those down.

Roll | Mega Man (Classic Series)

I've only played up through MM8, but I'm thinking about using an amalgam of game and Archie comic canon.

Also, thinking about picking up Ruby Spears Roll at some point, so if it's okay to ask about two characters in one thread...

The important thing to remember with Roll is that, while she can be spunky and all, she's not a super snarky individual. She actually enjoys cooking, cleaning, and taking care of her house.

It's a common thing in fanfiction in the like to have her chomping at the bit to help Megaman fight and all, but that's really not her personality? Remember, she's a classical robot. She can't really make her own decisions, she lives purely through what Dr. Light has programmed her for, and he programmed her to be a ten year old girl and a house-cleaning robot. Even her Data Card describes her as a kind-hearted girl who enjoys helping around the house, and it specifically points out that she's a coward as her bad point.

That said, she also probably has a better working knowledge of physics and robotics than 90% of Nobel Prize winners today, given that she lives with and was built by a guy who won the Nobel Prize for something that wasn't even his scientific strong point.

I'm no fate expert but I've played fate/extra a few times. this rin is sarcastic but quieter than fate/stay night rin. Also considerably more openly dere.

Extra Rin is definitely more emotional and open about as much than Stay Night Rin. When she gets flustered, you'll know it. When she's angry, likewise. She wears her heart on her sleeve more than she probably cares to admit, and she tends to react pretty strongly to things.

She also tends to be generally meaner with her sarcasm and ribbing? She's very, very blunt, and pretty damn rude too. She actively snubs people more, and she's more aggressive about doing so.

You should also keep in mind is that outside of the Moon Cell, she's basically a terrorist! She's confident and independent and knows how to handle herself, and I imagine she would be reluctant to accept help from others even outside the context of the Holy Grail War. Her knowledge of survival skills is probably at the very least decent, so I don't imagine she would have trouble settling in and getting herself supplies in your typical jamjar, if that's the kind of thing that would be an issue there.

She does seem a little wistful about her inability to live the normal life of a teenage girl, though. (Ex: Saying she wants to go back to Japan and go to school if you select the right option before you fight her in Rani's route.) It's probably not something she would readily admit to normally, but in the right circumstances it might come up.

idk, that's about all I can think of. Is there anything else specific?

GENERAL: MINOR CHARACTERS

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm about to app a side character to a game for the first time and was wondering if anyone had any tips? I'm used to playing main characters with lots of background and screen time, so depending on headcanon for most things is going to be really new for me. Any kind of advice would be appreciated!

I'd like to see this too, but I'll give you what I can!

Studying a character you want to play really thoroughly is a good idea in general(I personally take notes on every single trait I notice and what every action they take--even the most mundane things--could possibly mean about them when I canon review), but it's especially important when you want to play and build on a minor character. You don't have as much to work with, so make sure to use it to its fullest. This is especially helpful if you don't want to/can't go too far into headcanon for an app.

keep a journal entry of headcanon, with justified reasons for why it makes sense.

Re: GENERAL: MINOR CHARACTERS

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure what kind of material you're playing from, but if it's something with visuals (or lots of description), my advice would be to take a look at their surroundings to get a good feel of their environment. What sorts of things are laying around (what things aren't), what kind of city/town/random spaceship/etc did they grow up in, who all might they come in contact with on a daily basis, how is their room or house decorated? Etc.

I play a minor character from a video game and what I did was tried to incorporate those sorts of things in my headcanon to make it more believable. (Like, for example, mine lives in a city with lots of machinery going all the time, so he finds it hard to concentrate when there isn't some kind of background noise.) Even stuff like how a character dresses or talks can tell you a bit about their personality or how they were raised. Another thing you might want to look into is what other characters say about your character (if they do). Sometimes they can throw out hints, too.

Compared to a main character, it's kind of like working backwards sometimes, but that can also make it a lot of fun. Hope that helped at least a little!

Re: GENERAL: MINOR CHARACTERS

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
When playing a minor character, examine what you know of the canon world, and details surrounding not only your character, but the characters they are most frequently around. Examine the character's reactions to things and the character's behaviour. In the case of one of the characters I play, her sibling gets a decent amount of backstory and screentime, but my character is very minor with only a few spoken lines. However, since I know more about the sibling, I can make some reasonable headcanon for upbringing and I can note contrasts between her and her sibling's experience.

Also, never do anything based on fanon. It's fine to look at what other people have done with the character and look at what aspects of the character they develop, but make sure to canon review and make your own decisions on what you're going to do.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-04 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Best thing to do to start with is to go through and consider what we know about the character. Write down all the facts that you have if that helps. Then look at those facts and figure out things you can infer from them.

For instance, let's say your minor character is a scientist. That already gives some ideas of what their life was like, for instance it would be reasonable to assume they were well-educated and won some science fairs as a kid.

Do research on their profession, keep an eye out on their canon for what things are like where they live and work. Also keep an eye out on their personality and remember that people act like they do for a reason. A weird quirk could be a clue on something in their backstory and help you with some headcanon.

So basically what you want to do is take the facts that you have and extrapolate on why the character would do that stuff or act that way? And keep in mind that their backstory is likely more on the normal and boring side with maybe some accomplishments to make them important enough to be a part of the story as a minor character rather than one of the nameless masses. Use that stuff to flesh them out and make them a person rather than a plot device.

Benjamin Sisko - Star Trek: DS9

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
My friends marathoned the series a few months ago so I'd like to avoid rewatching the entire show. That said, I still need a quick canon review to refresh my memory, and I'm looking for some really good Sisko-centric episodes to rewatch and take notes on. Any suggestions? I all ready plan on watching the pilot eps, In the Pale Moonlight, The Visitor, the last episode of season 6, and the last major arc of season 7. I'm also mulling over which Dominion War episodes I should focus on the most.

Using and/or editing PBs for obscure character?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-06 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking of playing a guy for a pretty obscure series... so obscure that he has very little fanart (pretty mediocre ones at that and/or the artists go with a relatively inaccurate fandom version of the character. I'm a good editor and was thinking of using another character from a slightly more popular series (but still obscure) to make one guy look like the one I want to play... Like changing eye, hair, and shirt color. So what I want to know is, are there pet peeves for this and should I watch out for anything?

Peter Puppy | Earthworm Jim

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Very serious about this, rpanons. I think I have a pretty good grasp on his character, too.

My only problem right now is trying to figure out how to handle his hulk mode. He turns into a lunatic whenever he's angry, hurt, or scared at no fault of his own but it's kinda counter productive when it comes to making and keeping cr. I'll have a Jim too so that should help, but any suggestions would be grand.

I just really need to get my interpretive dance on, rp style.

common pitfalls of oc players who play them? :o

CANON OCS

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Any general tips on putting together a canon OC? The one I have in mind is an established character that has basically no lines or personality (I know "canon OC" can mean a few different things.)

I've never played any kind of OC so I'm kind of overwhelmed by the idea. Usually I do side characters that I can really scrutinize but this time there's nothing to scrutinize. Do you just kind of... think up a character in your head and treat your headcanon like it was canon canon?
