puritanical american christian government officials pressure visa and mastercard by saying they won't use their services and will take them to court if they continue to fund "obscenity" > visa and mastercard refuse to allow "obscene" payments on their systems, making it next to impossible for adult content creators to survive > everyone else has no choice about agreeing to it because visa and mastercard are involved in literally everything > the internet becomes a sterile "safe space"

once they're done going after adult content they'll turn the same pressure on lgbt+ content which they will also label "obscene"

which ironically would make the sort of material they’re trying to get rid of (child exploitation, sexual abuse of women, incest) harder because these types of secret underground groups usually are full of people who keep encouraging others to engage in more extreme behaviors with how insular they are

i come from a place that functions like that because internet access isn't guarateed and criminals aren't idiots. if it never gets put up on the internet, just manual peer2peer, it's way harder to trace

Bans didn't work for alcohol (Prohibition era gangsters) and it doesn't work for guns (places like Chicago have high gun violence despite strict gun control laws) and it doesn't work for drugs (everyone concedes the War on Drugs was failure). They never learn, but protection isn't the intent. It's power.
