Subjectively, "the worst fandom" is, to me, usually whatever fandom I'm in at the time, because their stupid fucking behavior is always right in my face.

Objectively? Voltron. Especially the fandom's impact on western fandom culture as a whole.

fully agree with you, anon. i really enjoyed vld when it first dropped and watched the 1st season multiple times with different people. then suddenly dumb teenagers started acting up and harassing voice actors at conventions and i was so turned off that i never bothered to watch the following seasons.

i've been in my share of shit fandoms, not throwing shade, just the amount of abuse that fellow fans would hurl at each other for not doing those two fandoms right.

Gacha game fandoms have to be the most unhinged mainly because parasocialism and tribalism are part of how it operates, as well as the amount of money sunk into it. You have the worst of both worlds with people who either act like kpop stans, or the outright incels who do nothing but spam slurs.

I'm curious as to what gacha game fandoms you're in. Because the ones I've been in have been idol-adjacent and sweet Jesus the parasocialism is BAD. If it's not men freaking out about the idea that their waifu might have talked to a man, it's teenagers self-inserting hard on their fave.

Homestuck was the craziest one I was actually a part of. It was full of terminally online shut-ins so isolated from the world around them that they genuinely believed concepts like 'platonic soulmates' and 'romantically/sexually charged rivalries' were not only invented by Homestuck, but so unique they could only be described by canon-specific jargon. Most of them only went outside to descend upon conventions in massive swarms, where they threw buckets at each other and ruined other people's cosplay with their unsealed makeup.

I think the actual craziest fandom ever is Harry Potter, though. It spawned multiple cults, one of which got big enough for an honest to god religious schism. I can't think of many other fandoms that even had one cult.

I remember when a bunch of Homestuck cosplayers jumped in the pool at ACen and their makeup ruined everything. IIRC the hotel had to shut down the pool and that was the closest anyone got to banning a specific cosplay-fandom from a con.

voltron fandom started modern anti culture, including and up to harassing/sending death threats the voice actors on social media

it is between homestuck and voltron. i think those two fandoms invented a lot of the most annoying shit we see in modern fandoms today.

however, my secondary answer is harry potter for the sheer volume of infamous batshit bnfs it produced + the number of people that still refuse to let it go today

can't believe nobody's mentioned Dragon Age yet. maybe they've chilled out over the years
