We Could Be's the only one that comes to mind, though I can't remember other than word of mouth if they're going to be hosting TDMs this summer or not. That, and the last reserve period was over in seconds.

if you're just looking for rpable characters + a fun game that's not expensive, go for older releases of AAA rpgs that either still look good or are moddable. you can get a lot of content to play through, not to mention fanworks, and still find plenty of people who'll want to play with those characters.

Is this a game where you plan to have established OCs imported in from their own worlds, or would they be new characters explicitly made to be part of the game universe?

reserve periods being over in seconds is par for the course for most murdergames that aren't invite only. that's one of the downsides to them - there are usually way more people trying to get in than there are slots.

yeah, the only real exceptions are like, the themed ones that used to be more common years back where you had specific restrictions on appable cast (e.g. holiday themed game where you can only app characters from say, holiday themed or at least hallmark movie canons). some of the more off the wall themes filled up more slowly or didn't get off the ground at all, but i don't think i've seen that kind of incredibly specific game around for years now.

ime mgs tend to be both fast-paced and time sensitive enough that you'd likely want a mod available whenever most of the players are active in case any questions arise while in the middle of important threads, if at least to say "hey we heard your question and will get back to you soon after conferring with mod b" if it's not something that can be answered right away

which means that if the timezones clash and you say, are an EST based mod going to bed at 8pm PST time and the PSTers are getting up to stuff later at night, you might want to pull in someone who can help with availablity on that front. within reason of course; no one is expecting a mod to get back to a question at 3am in the morning, but like, 9-11pm is still prime tagging hours in a lot of cases, for ex. ultimately that will depend on how involved your setting and mechanics are, though, and whether you foresee that your setting will require more mod input from you whenever/if characters are investigating if your game is going to be one of the ones with a more interactable setting.

if you're solomodding, esp as a first time mod, i'd probably recommend paring down any mechanics and keeping the back end as lightweight as possible- restrict amount of npcs to as few as necessary, do not set up too many critical setting investigation threads that need to be completed before thursday or friday or whatever or else risk stalling out awkwardly if something happens or you get overwhelmed by the modwork load, etc etc.

and canon blind anons have to explain what it's about based on fandom osmosis

I am still reading, but I think I will eventually want to pursue characters from both grandmaster of demonic cultivation and heaven official's blessing.

my concern is that both these canons seem to make up countries or only reference architecture of the times of early China. heaven's official blessing does heavily nod towards the Gobi desert. mdzs references Wei Wuxian caring about political background players of the clans, which seemingly have no place on the map other than 'east, northwest,' etc. Like... I wanna know without spoilers where we're at in the world. Does anyone have that?

should I focus on Chinese history and/or mythology to make a convincing character for either of the aforementioned canons? I want to do things as loyally as I can.

while poly ships (both in smut and not smut games) have become more common in dwrp the last few years, the most common thing in smut games is still open ships. aka serious relationship with just one person but they both fuck whoever

Both are viable options, with their own pros and cons. I've seen more MGs do TDMs over Mock Weeks for that very reason, I believe. Since with a TDM, you're free to hop in whenever whereas reserving for a Mock Week can be over and done with quickly before anyone has the chance to open the page. A medium between the two could work? Could you explain what you mean by scheduled updates to the TDM? I'm a little lost.

And I get that! Powers in MGs definitely helps spruce things up for events such as case planning, where someone's power may come into play during the case. The game I was in had powers mitigated and nerfed, to where people could still use certain powers, but less powerful than they are in canon.

True, that's what has me hesitant on attempting to solomod this game. Aside from inexperience (with hosting MGs. I've hosted Dangan-likes RPs before on other platforms like Discord, but those are completely different to how MGs operate and aren't as fast-paced), I worry attempting to tackle it alone will be taxing. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel or add any gimmick or mechanic (at least not at this point), just a simple MG with a standard Sunday-Thursday peace, Friday investigation, Saturday trial setup.

And I'm CST, so timezones clashing could be an issue. Would applications for a mod work here? I know previous MGs have held those in the past before and yielded results. Since I don't have too many people on my timeline I don't believe would be interested in being involved in a MG, and I'm nervous to ask any of the players in the one MG I've been in since it'd just feel rude asking.

by scheduled updates i meant like listing a time when you'd have a mod played or friend volunteer character die for investigating, a trial, etc. i remember watching a TDM for a murder game where a mod character died and a volunteer was the murder and it simulated how the whole week would usually go with like 3 posts i think? mingle investigation trial.

i play from both, and my default is to treat this as a fictional chinese-inspired environment, leaning on mid-imperial china. if you google, there are some (speculative!) maps of roughly where in china the mdzs clans are each based.

personally, i think you can inject as many nods to chinese customs, literature and cultural references as you want - but make them a feature, with the understanding that if you're assuming something major ('what would our characters' children's 100th day celebrations look like?') you may wish to doublecheck with your thread partner that they're embracing the same headcanon. this is ultimately fantasy china, so you absolutely have leeway. i hope you enjoy!

I don't have my copies in front of me but the seven seas translations will usually have a appendix on culture and so on, along with the footnotes. I'd start with those as a reference point. They're both xianxia, which is a very Chinese genre, so even if the world itself isn't explicitly based on Chinese culture, the ways in which they deviate from historical reality are still influenced by the fact that they're written in that context.

If you're going to research anything, I'd start with the general rules of cultivation as depicted in xianxia, because that will both lead you into the cultural influences that you might not be aware of and the "magic rules" of the setting.

Pixie Led and Karteria just opened and seem to be doing well.

having played in powers-on murdergames, i can say they can be incredibly fun and lead to some really creative cases, but they also require a lot more balancing to make sure everyone is on an even playing field.

A person in my game ships our characters. I told them I very much do NOT ship them, but I enjoy their platonic relationship. I thought they understood, and were chill.

They're now going around in-game implying a romantic relationship between our characters. Time to get ready for an awkward conversation where I tell them to cut that shit out, I guess!
