a (previously?) good friend picked up the other half of my otp but doesn't ship it. cool, i don't mind gen stuff! happy to help them voice test and do platonic cast stuff in memes and psls and whatever else. things seemed ok for a while.

but then they picked up the half i play as well and keep talking on plurk about how the character definitely isn't and couldn't be into anyone else in canon and a bunch of other interpretations pretty counter to how i and most other people viewed canon and it's getting kind of annoying. every other plurk has mini rants about disagreeing with interpretations that match what i play out. i know not everyone will agree on characters and ships and i wouldn't call the ship canon or anything because it isn't, but it feels very directed?

it's very weird and has felt wildly passive aggressive for weeks now and i've mostly decided to drift away from them but has anyone else ever experienced this?

i would say ranting once or twice about others' interpretation of the character could have nothing to do with you, but constantly going on about it where they know you'll see it does seem extremely targeted and passive aggressive. a good friend (i'd argue even someone just with better social skills) wouldn't constantly shit on your interpretation, they'd agree to disagree and move past it. i'm sorry your former friend sucks so much.

yeah, i told myself it was just a coincidence the first two times and then i went okay maybe it's a thing! enough so that one other mutual asked me if we were fighting or something (we aren't to my knowledge they just REALLY prefer a very rare and uncommon ship and i think are mad that my ship is the popular choice in fandom)

is this something they always did with other characters and ships too or just this one in particular? if it's behavior that's generally very common for them and something they do every single time they get into a new fandom or character, i wouldn't necessarily think it's targeted, but i'd still think it's tactless and unnecessary to yuck people's yum in their presence instead of just airing that out with friends whom you know agree with you in dms or something. it just makes someone seem unpleasant and socially tone-deaf to push that in other people's faces.

no, it just started with this character and ship. it's one of those ships pushed by marketing but never confirmed and widely present in fandom due to that. they prefer a ship with a very minor character (which is fine) and seem to be taking it personally that most people don't ship that (which is less fine) and seem to have gotten bitter towards me specifically for having partners willing to play out the popular ship with me while they have no one willing to play out the unpopular ship with them...? is my best read on the situation. it's just kind of fucking insane since we used to get along fine and i was perfectly happy to do gen only stuff with them and didn't even talk about the popular ship anymore when i spoke to them once they told me they disliked it??

this sounds like very typical passagg rper behavior from like... 15+ years ago... when we were children.

not directly to me, but i've seen it on plurk and while i wouldn't say it's targeted, there's a very mean-spirited quality to it that's a pretty big red flag imo. i get being dissatisfied with fanon interpretations but when you're full-on ranting about stuff you know your plurk friends play, like...it's your plurk, but it's going to be off-putting to more than just the people with the disapproved-of ship.

ngl i'm starting to think the ship is ratio/aventurine from hsr. saw a rper who clearly hated the ship who had these same vibes, it seemed like a major red flag and i decided to steer clear of them. you don't have to agree with the fandom ship, but their take seemed to be based on being contrary and hating fandom more than anything in from the canon.

even if it isn't that person, cut whoever this is loose op because that behavior isn't worth it.
