in cross-medium threads i pick one medium and apply it to both characters

the thought of visualizing both simultaneously never occurred to me. it wouldn't appeal to me either, so i at least get that part

just like i know that having aphantasia makes you no less creative, anon, surely you can appreciate that having a visual component to my imagination does not mean i'm suffering from some kind of constant sensory overload!
mental images are no more inherently exhausting than any other kind of thought, or than stuff like listening to instrumental music while reading a book.

fwiw anon i have hyperphantasia and while it isn't normally exhausting in the way you described it can become exhausting when i'm not doing it on purpose (i.e. hyperphantasia around an intrusive thought)

so you aren't wrong to think it could be exhausting, but since most people are somewhere inbetween aphantasia and hyperphantasia, I think they're not usually that bothered by it.

at the risk of worsening this tangent, a lot of visual thinkers never realize word-thinking people constantly have a "voice" in their head.

neat thing: people who have an internal monologue move their larynx along with their inner "voice." reading and counting silently also create this kind of sub-vocalization. you're moving your larynx ever so slightly right now, as you read this.

disturbing, yes, but since the movements can be detected via EEG and matched to real phonemes that make up spoken language, it can be used to provide synthetic "speech" to people who've lost or damaged their vocal chords.

I find it really hard to explain to people I have neither a mental voice or visual imagination and think entirely in abstract concepts. Writing is fun for me because I translate thoughts directly to words without knowing what they're going to be until they're out.

You know what's way more exhausting for me? The voice I hear narrating everything I do 24/7 as if there's a third-person book about my life being read aloud in my head. People talk about "silencing your mind" so much as part of anxiety treatment but that bitch just is not shutting up.

for me it changes for whoever i am narrating for in my head. by default, i hear my voice, even the way i pitch things or speed up or slow down. if i'm recalling lines, i can hear it in the voice of the character even if it switches from one language to another. sometimes i can hear it so vividly i actually think someone is talking to me and get confused at times, especially when i am alone.

this also comes with sound for me. like i could sometimes imagine it so vividly i'd mistake hearing an actual piano or baby crying or something to be there when it isn't.
