This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. meh, I don't play from those canons but I wouldnt consider them cringe either. you gotta do what you gotta do.

what's the community thoughts on playing from a LA canon with plenty of available icons and using stylized fanart?

100% fanart icons instead of the la source? big rarity tbh. im actually not sure ive ever seen that personally...maybe in cases like book rpers a la harry potter or whatever, where they're trying to use something else instead of the movie adaptation actors?? i guess id just find it odd

ive seen a mixture of la and fanart before, though, and they seem to get along just fine

for me it isn't about LA or animation. if your canon has plenty of material and you use ONLY fanart then something's fishy. please notice the emphasis on "only". fanart to compensate for a few expressions canon lacks is fine. fanart for canons with no icon material is also fine.

if there is plenty of canon source material but you use primarily fanart i would honestly assume you only want them to look 'hot' and plan to play the character as extremely ooc or horny because this has been my experience so far with those types

dda but oh man yeah this is exactly it...there was a trend i couldn't put my finger on with the handful of journals i've seen doing this, and you just hit the nail on the head

big vibes that they feel like the canon appearance is too fugly for the kind of rp they're looking for (shippy and/or smutty exclusively)

as someone who plays from mhy canons i feel semi called out. sure i don't find the models attractive but i also think their emotional range is extremely limited and on a 100x100 icon the faces disappear into oblivion

can i get a free pass for my fanart icons if i follow the other fanart icon rules

ngl chief it's a bit odd that you wouldn't even want to use at least a handful of cap icons for some of the more standard expressions/poses before going to fanart for everything else

even less of an excuse if it's hsr characters with how expressive those models are now too

like you aren't going to rp jail rly, but 100% fanart icons in a journal from a canon with generally pretty nice visuals and a wealth of iconmakers? just kinda weird. the mild side-eyes are gonna happen unfort

i use a mix, but i feel like only a handful of the characters are actually expressive and the rest blur together to me. maybe i'm just bad at reading emotions on faces though, i know i have mild face blindness so that could be part of it

yeah having played off several hsr characters, there's absolutely zero reason not to use screencaps for icons there because there's plenty of expression range.

if you play from a canon that has plenty of iconnable material (and by that i mean good-quality stuff for caps because i've played from some canons that technically had plenty of material but the lighting on most of it was so hideous that it made making icons a nightmare) and you use fanart instead, yeah, that's a big red flag.
