oh, dreamwidth park is lonely in the dark/all the horny memes have no tag-outs

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

Piggybacking on this point: I'm not seeing a convincing reason for the "really" rebellious/evil/amoral guys to take instructions from the Dark Lord who enlisted them. For example, would Lex Luthor be satisfied to see her defeat Superman for him, or would he rather stay in his original universe to do it himself? I am simplifying this a lot and it is dependent on character choice and game suitability, but from the perspective of a player with some villainous characters I'm not finding any distinctive difference between this and other "you can do anything if you support the mighty NPCs, NPCs give you benefits" settings.

I’m sorry if I’m misunderstanding your point. The characters don’t have a choice. They are taken against their will, and if they don’t do as she says, she punishes them. They can do as she says, fight against her, or try to find a way out of Ravenloft.

It might be of use to you to include a character suitability section in the app, a one- or two-liner for the applicant to describe which of these options the character is inclined to, and the reason why they were selected.

I doubt we get as many of such cases these days, but having such a section could pre-empt those "but my character could just warp portal back home" "but my character is specialer than your OC/NPC and punishment doesn't work" "but my character has the bullshit ability to kill everyone" types. On the flip side someone could app Farmer Thanos with the eventual goal to let him gain/regain powers to become a huge threat if that is the direction the player wants to take.

That said, I'm completely canon blind so it could be that I am viewing this through the lens of typical DWRP mechanics than the tabletop style you had in mind.

as a fellow ravenloft scholar, i think this is a simple case of "not all games are for every character"

the setting is as OP describes, it both draws in people who are susceptible to corruption and works to corrupt those it draws in. if youre not willing to compromise on or at least toy with that point as a player, the setting is just not for you, simply put

Also, I don't think DWRP has nearly as many instances of players trying to break or ignore the setting as AYRT seems to fear. These days you usually only see the old holdouts of 'constant tea parties in horror games' and 'people refusing to play out sex in sex games', and even those issues aren't as severe as they used to be.
