oh, dreamwidth park is lonely in the dark/all the horny memes have no tag-outs

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

Silent Spring: looking for sensitivity readers!

[personal profile] silentspringmods 2023-11-29 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, neighbor! Silent Spring is a semiprivate suburban 60s horrorgame based loosely on the likes of We're Still Here, Holly Heights, and similar. Characters wake up in the uncannily idyllic early 1960s suburbia of Sweetwater, Maryland, an integrated bedroom community of Washington, DC - in the same household as a complete stranger to whom they have apparently always been married, at least according to the eerily and unwaveringly chipper neighbors who seem to know a little more than they should.

Because of the nature of the time period and in the interest of creating a game that's enjoyable for everyone, we're looking for sensitivity readers to offer their thoughts on NPCs/events/environmental details and mechanics. There is a wonderful panel of volunteers who have been helping me with depictions of areas of marginalization I don't personally face, but we still have a few blind spots the pool of our shared experiences doesn't reach. More opinions are always better because things vary within communities so although a lot of the game's mechanics are written from my/my associates' lived experiences and comfort levels interacting with them in a fictionalized setting, we welcome additional thoughts.

Right now we do not have any sensitivity readers for:
— visible physical disabilities, including people who use wheelchairs; experiences using prostheses or braces of any kind are particularly valuable
— black women/men/nonbinary people — because a big part of the horror is the suffocating nature of era-typical sexism and the town is about 40-40 black and white, black women and femmes' perspectives are a particularly high priority. Thoughts on black femininity and gender constraints as they manifest in black women/femmes' lives as well as what conformity horror means to you are very important!
— Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong, and any Latine perspectives

Public TDM will be posted on the 1st and a link will be posted on plurk (replurkable) as well as here on RPA. If you have any questions about the game, please direct them to the FAQ page or the interest check plurk or even PM this account/PP the mod plurk so that this request stays on topic. Thanks!

!!!! First of all thank you so much! I've been wanting to run something like this forever and finally took the leap and I'm so delighted that other people find the premise/a more historical flavor of horror neat too!

And a PM would be wonderful! I have a couple of different questions and a few things I'd really appreciate thoughts on if you have the time but some of them involve things that aren't set to go live/public-revealed just yet. Thank you so much for reaching out and for being willing to offer your help! It's very appreciated and I'm excited to hear what you have to say.

i don't tick any of those boxes myself but i just want to say i love this. one of the issues i have had in the past with games up this alley have been the almost blithe way insensitivity from the npcs because ~realism~ is talked about, so it really makes me feel good that there's real care and thought being put into this. thank you!

Aww, thank you! It's definitely something I was very nervous about, but I'm hoping that having a big group of sensitivity readers from different backgrounds will continue to allow the game to strike a good balance between NPCs that feel mostly true to era/dated in their views/suitably centrist and stuff that's too close to real life for a lot of players to enjoy.

Tav info

[personal profile] underelf 2023-12-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hello! I am wondering what kind of information is good to have in a journal for a Tav (or Durge) character. I haven't played protags like this outside of friends but have been thinking of trying her (and/or another of my tavs) on a meme or two. Just not really sure what people are looking for in terms of amount of information. Choices? Basic stats? a little background? A lot? When I play NPCs (or Origins) I am super laidback too, just happy to see all the good OCs/Tavs/etc. but I know a lot of people don't like blank journals with OCs in general so I'd like to set up an info page.

Thanks for your help! :}

for malleables like this I find a quick bullet point list the most useful since I can digest it quickly and tag faster. like a one or two sentence background, any big game choices that would alter how companions etc view or react to them, and then the basic details that help the non canon familiar: brief mention of any appearance things or powers you should know, maybe include preferences on ships or gen or whatever, that kind of thing.

Definitely helpful, thank you so much for your insight! I was planning on including general prefs/shipping/backtagging etc. but was at a loss for how much or how little other info was good <:

yeah i think a good rule of thumb is always "if someone doesn't know anything about my character, is this enough for them to tag me in short form?" and try to write it from that pov...as someone who tags cross-canon, it helps when people are able to wrap their character up in a short list and makes tagging them easier! and when i tag canonmates it lets me know any of the important things

How strongly would you judge someone for playing a character with a backstory full of ableist tropes in their canon backstory, if the player in question had a note about trying to do better than canon somewhere on their journal?

Re: CHARACTER ADVICE

(Anonymous) 2023-12-27 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i do not judge people for the characters they play and don't particularly care whether they try to do better than canon.

shrugs

people might not be overly eager to tag you but that goes for just about anybody you could pick up

if you veer into either getting too sanctimonious or too offensive with it then more people might side eye you but again, extremes will get you side eyed wherever

acknowledging unfortunate aspects of canon is nice but like, just own it and then play as normal, no need to get too self-flagellating about it

everybody's playing a barbie that might not appeal to somebody's tastes

Re: CHARACTER ADVICE

(Anonymous) 2023-12-27 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd roll my eyes at you for the entire performative 'I know I'm playing from something ableist as all hell but I'm gonna do better than canon, promise!' bullshit, because if you're that aware of the ableist shit in their backstory, and if it bothers you that much, why did you pick up the ableist trope in the first place?

but I'd also probably forget you exist in .5 seconds after I'm done rolling my eyes

Re: CHARACTER ADVICE

(Anonymous) 2023-12-28 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
eh, i don't think it's unheard of for people to consume canons where they enjoy some aspects of them but remain aware of the other, shittier aspects. in rp there's also the appeal of the fixer-upper route, where you can flesh out characters that have interesting concepts/potential but are bogged down by piss poor canon execution

but yeah there's giving a nod to the shittiness of canon handling in the form of a note in info or an opt-out post, and then there's wringing your hands and repeatedly apologizing for playing this character every other tag/all over your journal

the latter is def excessive and will look performative. gotta remember nobody's exactly forcing you to climb on this rp cross, so there's no need to go acting like doing it is agonizing you 24-7

+1 op i dont think ayrt is the one feeling undeservedly smart right now

Re: CHARACTER ADVICE

(Anonymous) 2023-12-28 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't, regardless of whether or not you had that disclaimer. I know we do have shitty people in DWRP but unless I have reason to believe otherwise I assume the best from everyone I'm tagging with. There's a lot of reasons someone might want to RP from a canon that isn't great about that, and I really don't like going down the slippery slope of only rping from "morally pure" canons. It is generally assumed if you're using anything from from Lovecraft you probably hate Lovecraft as a person and that's the rule I run under.

But for example, Xavin from the Runaways comic was uh not handled great as far as genderfluid/nonbinary rep, especially with how it tackled them dating Karolina. Doesn't change that I still loved the character back when I was still in the closet about being nonbinary because something in it appealed to me, and while I haven't RPd them for a while I did play them in PSLs for a while.

Instead I'd focus on making sure there's a trigger warning somewhere very easy to find on your journal about the canon having a lot of ableism in it and an opt-out post for anyone who doesn't want to deal with that themselves.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-28 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
I am very much with you about Xavin, great example of the sort of character who you can go 'I can do better than canon' with.

Re: CHARACTER ADVICE

(Anonymous) 2023-12-28 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
i feel like it really depends on what sort of ableist tropes we're talking about here and also what time period the canon came from, honestly.
